I guess XBMC is more a stable player (with no shuttering etc.) then the native PlexPlayer/theater under OSX right now…
… and with PleXBMC and your support here it is the best of both worlds.

PleXBMC 3.1.1 BETA
Only apply if the current stable plexbmc (3.0.7) doesn’t work for you, or if you ae happy with me breaking your set-up 
This version will not go live in the repository - it is a manual install only. However, it will still auto-update to any future version after this one, so will not break compatibility
This is a BETA because there are some large changes to the way that plexbmc discovers and gathers server information. There are also other fixes added in and a change to subtitles:

Just installed, strict views are working great on Quartz3, wonderful…
Just something I noticed, I removed the old version of PleXBMC and installed the new version however it is still saying it is version 3.0.7…previously strict views was ignored but now working so I ‘assume’ I am running 3.1?

2 additional issues:
- with the quartzv3 skin, on the main screen, I see the covers with the latest added movies, but nothing with series. I don’t know if it is related to the latest plexbmc or raspbmc releases, because I updated both and it was working well 3 weeks ago.
- plexbmc helper : When I launch a movie from my Ipad, I think the movie is launched 2 times … I see quickly the movie starting for 2 seconds, then it stops and restart again (but this time it takes 10-15 seconds to start again). It was not doing that with version 3.0.4, the movie was starting immediately without reload.
There seems to be an issue with updating the addons on the RPi. I've had trouble updating this and Quartz - both required me to reboot. I don;t think this is down to my addons, but perhaps due to how the RPi is configured/built. It has a tiny /tmp area (10mb) and I don't know whether that plays a part sometimes.
If you aren't sure, look at the log file - it should print the version umber everytime it runs.
It's possible that you don;t actually have any recently added TV series. The current versions bring back any tv shows that I have in recently added.
It's a strange one. Plex is actually sending two commands, one shortly after the other - and I have no idea why. The reason that it was working ok in 3.0.4, is that I didn't acknowledge the request, but this caused plex/web (and some others) to report an error. So, I now (correctly_ acknoeldge them, but still plex sends another. It only seems to happen sometimes, so I wonder whether it is a time based repeat - i'm looking to see if I can put in a black out window for double media play requests within 5 seconds of each other.
Also - i’ve re-released the BETA at 3.1.1 (see post above) - and in this i’ve quickly snuck in an on Deck shelf, which can be switched in “look and feel” back to recently added. I think recently added is probably the default.
Am I crazy to go with a Roku instead of this on a Raspberry Pi?
Thanks Hippojay, just about to try your 3.1.1 beta…just to let you know I am not running a RPi, I am using a combination of Windows/OSX clients…I like your PleXBMC because XBMC is far more stable then PlexHT (I compiled Martin’s version that enables the PVR)…however even using the PlexHT with PVR then skin support at present is a little while off being optimal…I have my wife, child and parents that come over often that find using anything but the Quartz3 skin the easiest to use…so in the end XBMC Frodo, NextPVR backend, PleXBMC/Quartz3 and your mod for enabling LiveTV on the main menu has given me exactly what I wanted…thanks
Just tried 3.1.1. Works great for me, thanks alot. DTS transcoding works perfectly. Also when diasbling DTS-Downmix on PMS I now get AC3 5.1 instead of stereo. I’m totally happy. with the solution now.

I'm not sure about the Roku as I never used one, but RPi with Raspbmc and PleXBMC is getting better and better. The RPi is basically invisible, definitely inaudible and if your TV supports CEC you can control it with the TV remote and that makes the whole experience almost seamless. I like it alot.
I have 3x ATV2s previously using the Plex app and purchased the Roku for the 1080. While the roku does the job, I found it slow to load (maybe my settings) and the GUI of Plex to be unbearable, which I think is a limitation of the Roku itself, rather than a Plex failure.
I have then switched back to the ATV2s using Frodo and PleXBMC until a time where I can build HTPCs or get RPi’s and will continue to use PleXBMC.

But - Movies like Avatar or Transformers 3 runs out of buffer. PMS runs still with 100% and the RPi also at 50-60%. Quality-Setting is 12.

I've only used my RPi for viewing Tv shows at the moment (I haven't had time to sit down and watch a film). I'll try and get one running all the way through to see if I can see what's the problem (although I doubt it'll be able to stomach Avatar or transformers 3 again!).
I take it you are transcoding these films?
I also try the 3.1.1 …seems working great so far… and the strict skins views working also again!

If I use the 8 Mbps-Setting there is no buffering. 10 Mbps works also fine. 12 and 20 Mbps have buffering issues. In all these settings the PMS (not the pi) go to 100%. I thought that the machine does not transcode the film - only the DTS audio track.
Network uses at these moments up to 40-50 Mbit
I have both. You can't really go wrong with either. If you want it for Plex, then I would probably go with the rpi. The rpi will be better at direct playing anything, as the Roku seems to have issues with that. My Roku is the original, so it only supports transcoded, but the newer Roku's are supposed to handle mkv direct play. I think I probably prefer the roku UI. The categories for recently watched, on deck, etc are just more accessible since you don't navigate through a tree of menus. If you want netflix, amazon, crackle, or any other internet video, then the Roku is much better. I realize you can do all that with the video channels on plex, but those channels are transcoded, often break, buggy, etc. It's better to have officially supported channels on the roku.
Hi, I was also having problems with the latest version of Plex Media Server and PleXBMC 3.0.7 (encoding, etc…) so I’ve been testing 3.1.1 beta. Everything works OK now (great!), except subtitles: if I choose “Plex Control” in “audio and subtitles selector” I get this error when I start playing the video:
