Plexconnect like Roku

>> my 70 year old mom install/configure PlexConnect on her MacBook

Well, at least you mom already has an MacBook...

:-D

Hey, I am fine with it. With all your arguments and such.

I didn't design the aTV nor Apple's walled garden. I was just trying to solve one issue: Having Plex on my aTV. The native client got a bit long on the tooth, aTV 3 wasn't jailbroken (and still is not...).

AFAIK, PlexConnect is the best solution to this issue so far.

If you choose a Roku over it, it is your decision. I am not complaining. If you have the hardware already, take it.  Hand it to you parents. I never used one myself, I really can't say anything about the GUI.

But if you have no Roku, just an aTV, PlexConnect works fine. For me. For now. Nobody knows what Apple is going to do. Currently you could get a cheap Raspberry Pie, just to run PlexConnect on it. Well, or use RasPlex directly. Whatever. You pay, you choose. Good thing we have multiple options. :-)

That's what she has a son for ;)
Seriously though the main limitation is that you need 'something' running PlexConnect so that the ATV is usable for non Plex stuff, if this isn't important then you could wait a few days for the daemon stuff to be sorted out and just have your mom boot her MacBook when she wants to watch a film.

She actually has a jailbroken ATV2 as of now but since she is in Europe and I am in the US it is getting harder to keep the jailbreak up to date!

So if I read your posts correctly, the new Python code on ATV2 should work as soon as the deamon is implemented.

As far as the other nonPlex content is concerned, she really only uses it to connect to my PlexServer and possibly my Photostream. Would that still work?

I think he was talking about running plexconnect on a iphone if im not mistaken jailbroken or not.

Don't hold your breath. Nobody knows yet, if/how aTV can/will auto-start python/PlexConnect after a reset, ie. power outage.

If you have a jailbroken ATV2 i would put money on you having a fully portable solution very soon just using the ATV2.

I do have a jailbroken aTV 2...

It definitely works, you can even disable the DNS server and use the host file in the ATV to do the redirection (you will need to SSH in via eg your iphone if you use this and move between networks to alter the IP it points to) or use the add site method to add a specific PlexConnect icon and do away with the DNS redirection and hijacking of trailers app altogether.

It looks like the daemon part is the last piece of the puzzle for jailbroken users
