PlexConnect on remote library

I have a few friends who have access to my library. One of them was a given a ATV and wants to use it to view my library.

Am I right i thinking he could run PlexConnect locally and point the dns at my dynamic ip? Obviously he'd be screwed when my ip changes but other than that it should work??

Yes, just use dyndns. If you don’t need to share channels use myplex.

Just use MyPlex... it's made for that. No need to play around with DNS settings.

Share your server, share some Sections with your friend.

Once he is logged into MyPlex he should be able to see your library (or portions of) under the Myplex tab.

Pardon my ignorance, i have been following the forums for a while, and have yet to come up with a definitive answer...

is there a way to watch Plex on ATV3 WITHOUT a local computer running plexconnect?

i.e. just take your ATV3 on vacation, no laptop or ios device?

I know there was some discussion of doing that by pointing the ATV DNS to a dyndns but that was frowned upon as being too insecure by the authors.

Am I generally correct?

If so, I assume the cheapest, most portable away to take your home plex library on the road is chromecast?

Thanks again for all your hard work developers!

My server is currently shared, he and others have been using either laptops or roku to stream the library. He would still need to run PlexConnect locally and do the ATV hack to be able to get Plex on the ATV via the trailers app?

As far as I know there is a way to use your atv3 only but it is frowned upon due to security reasons to open up port 53 I believe on your home router to have it as a remote atv3 only solution.

The most secure and easiest way to do it would be to have another device with your atv3 hosting PlexConnect then running myplex.

I personally have tested a atv2 on the road with a IOS device hosting PlexConnect pointed back at my home pms. I also have used just my atv2 with a plexconnect app using addsite & baa’s atv2 method. Here are some links for those, I don’t use a atv3 or like port 53 open so I don’t have that link. You can thank apple for killing addsite otherwise we could all enjoy a secure atv only remote solution not just jailbroken atv2 owners.

Maybe you can help us crack addsite

I'm sorry but hosting plexconnect on an ios device? Not sure i get the point of that.

Why wouldn't you just use the official Plex ios app, and myplex to access your remote content and then Airplay over to ATV3?

Good question... I raised it earlier, too.

I guess, Wahlman wants to have exactly the same aTV UI, wherever he is... and use aTV's remote, nothing else.

:-D

Well for starters when using the ios plex app to airplay to my atv it lags any remote network im at to where it is almost unusable for other users and buffers typically. I also like to just use the remote for the atv to navigate my complete home content with configured channels without looking at a tiny screen when I can look at a much larger screen to navigate my plex content with a physical remote. Just how I prefer things, that is all  I like my eyeballs to last as long as possible.

I only use atv2’s so I don’t need this option since I have my own plexconnect app on my jailbroken atv pointed at my home server for a local and remote solution. I was just trying to give atv3 owners another way to use a atv remotely by using a jailbroken iOS device to host plexconnect to redirect trailers back to their home server if desired to have a home away fom home plexconnect feel without using airplay the entire time. Its just an alternative method that I prefer that I will use if my atv2’s ever break and I use a atv3 remotely sometime in the future. Why be stuck having to airplay the entire time when you could just run a simple script in the background, I guess it depends on the ios revision but I would think this would be a lot less work on your network & ios device alike since it would just be running plexconnect. I thought some ios revisions you can’t multitask while doing airplay and even if you can I would imagine your ios device would run quite a bit slower due to it having to airplay constantly.

Airplay... does it still put the burden on the "sending" device? They are not "just" sending the URL to aTV, like chromecast seems to do it?

Hm. Interesting.

Wahlman, this seems like another valid reason to me. :-D

No it doesn’t keep it in a “serial” type connection but hands it off, although there is some kind check in with the original device now and then.

PlexConnect newby here....I have configured it and have it working perfectly to connect to my local plex server.  BUT, a friend also has a plex server and I would like to be able to access that through the PlexConnect "App" on my appleTV.  Should this work?  Can shared libraries be view through PlexConnect on my apple tv?

Sign into MyPlex in the PlexConnect settings and if your friend has shared any servers/sections with you you should see them appear in the MyPlex tab.

Thanks!  Ok.  So it should work  - great.

About a week/2 weeks ago I tried to sign in multiple times and got login failures and am sure that the uname/pw combination was good.  Any ideas why this would not have worked?  I did notice some comments about login issues related to changes to the plex back end as I browsed this forum.  Might i need to install the latest version of PlexConnect and try again?

Plex changed their domain name about a week ago so yes grab 0.3.1 or the latest commit to ensure you have no problems

Excellent.  I'll do so and report back!  Thanks for the quick responses.
