I have searched a little in the forums, but didn't come across the following:
What would it take to take an aTV with you to a friend and watch tv from there (providing there is internet available). I guess there is still the DNS server that is now pointing to my internal PMS. Will it be possible at all (now or in the future)?
Oh yes, indeed also a local plexconnect of course. Mmm.... Too bad. I really like the aTV interface, but love the Roku ease of use (for this particular case, bringing it with you).
With a jailbroken aTV you might be able to run PlexConnect directly on itself. There is another thread discussing this option - though so far no work (as far as I can see) has been done on how to start/restart the python script.
In ATV3, would it be possible to specify as DNS the remote location ? That would be a possible solution.
You do not want to open your DNS server to the world unless you know how to lock it down by using a more secure third party one; failure to lock it down will mean it ends up being attacked and used to attack other sites on the internet.
Please enlighten me on what you would call running a service on a secondary device to support running a feature on the main device which is interconnected to the same network? B)
All kidding aside I am very well aware that this was not what PlexConnect was set out for to be. I see it as a proof of concept by some extremely smart people. The main goal is obviously for Apple to open up their App. ecosystem and let the Plex team develop a real Plex App. Like they already did for iOS, Android and Roku.
Why are you saying "server infrastructure" to option 1, but not to 2?
With PlexConnect you actually could shut down its host once your started the 3hour movie... with AirPlay everything needs to run as far as I understand.
Well, given the circumstances, I think PlexConnect has come a long way. It's a beautiful app, constrained by Apple. So who's gonna solve the DNS situation and can it be?
I really like eye candy, but i prefer an "ugly-ass excuse of a user-interface" as remarked earlier, that allows me to use anywhere when connected to the internet. In the end watching the movie is what it is all about.
P.s. I have both aTV and Roku and would love aTV to be able to do the same.
I wish we could use a droid or jailbroken ios device to host plexconnect at a remote site. There is a mixture of solutions but using plexconnect at the remote site with myplex is the most secure and is the easiest method at this time. You dont get channels at this time with myplex but if you want to keep it easy just fire up pms at the remote site as well and add some channels to the mix.

Don't get me wrong Baa, I think you are an extremely talented and smart individual and PlexConnect is a major achievement!
But most of the requests from people about MyPlex integration is about running it standalone on a remote device. It usually is someones brother/mother/girlfriend that we want to set up with access to our PMS's.
If you think that having my 70 year old mom install/configure PlexConnect on her MacBook is just as easy as having her install Plex on her iPad, we probably are not on the same page. ;)
Go spend $200+ on a jailbroken atv2 on ios 5.2 untethered and you are all set. The atv3 has not been jailbroken yet so what your are asking is impossible at this time unless you buy some expensive vpn hardware to link site to site since addsite functionality was removed by apple. I would go with the atv2 but hey thats me, for a atv only solution at the remote site.
Seriously though the main limitation is that you need ‘something’ running PlexConnect so that the ATV is usable for non Plex stuff, if this isn’t important then you could wait a few days for the daemon stuff to be sorted out and just have your mom boot her MacBook when she wants to watch a film.
