Running PlexConnect on a remote ATV3 with MyPlex

So I'm a bit confused on how to set up an ATV remotely with MyPlex!?

I have a local ATV3 that runs fine with PlexConnect but how do I set up my girl friends ATV with whom I share my library over the internet at her place?

I can install the .cert file but how do I re-route the DNS entries since she will be connecting to my server over the internet? Do I need to run a local PMS with PlexConnect over at the remote site? That seems kinda counter intuitive.

Any help would be great.

Thx!

You need to run a local version of PlexConnect there.
In theory you can configure it to run from your PlexConnect but you may not want to expose the DNS and webserver parts to the whole internet.

but if i want to do that.. how do i do ? :)

Ever looked at wahlman.j's tutorials?

e.g. -> http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/82687-plexconnect-on-the-go-using-ddns-ios-5x-and-jailbreak-required/

Might be close to what you want... not sure about the jailbreak/iOS requirements, though.

That is somewhat disapointing. If I have to run a PM and PlexConnect at the remote location I might as well just run PMC/PHT and push to the ATV via Airplay! I had hoped to just be able to run it on a remote ATV without adding a server infrastructure.

I guess I'll just stick with pushing Plex from the iOS app over Airplay to the ATV!

We’ll, your solution does the same thing: runs a server and a client. I don’t see how you can avoid doing that unless the remote location is viewing through a browser.

You might be somewhat disappointed but it is an unsupported configuration due to the security problems of exposing the PlexConnect DNS server to the internet.

If you really understand what you are doing then there are threads on how to set this up but I would suggest you could utilise your own DNS server that allows you to restrict access to specific IP addresses or you will find your machine being used to attack websites.

Exactly my point, but it is actually cleaner and straight forward. No need to deal with .cert files and running PlexConnect!

Like I said the easiest way still is to run Plex on iOS/Android and Airplay to the ATV.

Also you can run PlexConnect on a embedded Linux device like a WRT/Tomato router or PI, a lot less power and money cost.

I fully understand but I was hoping that adding MyPlex support would cover that. Since that is the way all other clients access the server. If I am going to re-route DNS and IP's, why do I even need MyPlex!?

There is no code stored on your ATV, it works nothing like the other clients.  It needs to be re-directed to something to load PlexConnect to load the myPlex config to then let you view other peoples shared libraries.

To access servers shared with you as well as your own remote ones.

Or I can just tell my girlfriend to press "Play on AppleTV" on her iPhone  :P

If you have a atv 2 why not just give that to her jailbeak it on ios 5.2 untethered via seasonpass if you have that .shsh saved. Then follow my “plexconnect on the go” tut as baa suggested, it is in my signature as well which would eliminate the need for a plexconnect host at her place since dyndns would be hosting plexconnect to your atv2 over the internet. Otherwise at this given time rpi with the atv3 would be your cheapest plexconnect host/client solution i can think @ the remote site with myplex enabled via plexconnect on your atv pointed to your pms library.

Is there a way that I can set the pms to connect to the real ip (the one from whatsmyip.com) and then on the remote location set the DNS from the atv to that ip? I just want to have my server at my house and when I go to my girls house just connect to my server and watch movies

Not that I know of.

You can, run a IPSec VPN between your routers and specify the DNS address of your PlexConnect server on the aTV....

Could you give quick how to on performing this plexconnect vpn to create an atv only needed solution @ the remote site? Do you need special routers to make this work or OS’s or is this a free solution with existing hardware? Do you need to bring anything besides the atv from site to site if this was a non permanent, mobile solution?

Found a video looks involed but possible:
