Accessing remote PMS without on site PlexConnect

Hello,

I had browse the forum since yesterday, and I tried to set it up, but in the end I'm still not sure it's possible.

I have a dedicated server not at home.

I have an aTV3 at home and some crappy laptop.

Right now, I'm using my iPad to access myPlex and I use AirPlay to put it on the aTV.

I was wondering if there was anyway for the aTV to access directly PMS withtout any PlexConnect on the lan because I don't have anything to host it at home.

I had the impression it was possible reading some post but I don't know for sure and since I'm struggling with the installation since a few, I guess it's better to ask.

Thank you for any answer you can provide.

Best Regards,

Kevin

No PlexConnect-No MyPlex directly from aTV. Even if we will make a small MyPlex app for aTV we still need to run script on the computer to hijack exist app ..

Hello,

Thanks for the fast answer.

My point is : can I run the PlexConnect on my dedicated server (i.e. same server where PMS is running).

Kévin

It is technically possible to run a PlexConnect instance remotely but we don’t support it and would actively discourage it unless you are a network engineer or knowledgable enough to run a locked down, publically exposed DNS server. If you do this without securing it then it WILL get hijacked within minutes and used to create illegal attacks on websites as well as potentially opening up your machines to others.

Hello,

Thank you for your prompt answer. I will wait some of my friend to set it up then. At least I know it's possible.

BR,

Kevin

The "easiest" way would be to use VPN - routers to connect LAN's over WAN (aka site-to-site VPN bridge).

If you can run a VPN-server on your dedicated PMS server, would make things easier and brings you one step forward. But still - as stated by f00b4r, this is not something for the average Joe as it may involve static routing, firewall crap and QoS things (depending on your network setup) that need to be taken into account. And you will need to have decent upstream bandwidth to make it enjoyable.

Can you PM me please?

I dug into this a bit and this is what I figured out:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/86031-plexconnect-on-the-go-atv23-no-jailbreak/

Any news here?

Unless you have a atv2 jailbroken with plexconnect installed directly upon it this is not a option on a atv2/3 on iOS 6.x+ at this time unless you do the VPN method, expose your server to hackers unless you know how to lock it down as @f00b4r stated, or have a device/os hosting plexconnect at the remote site with your atv 2/3 on iOS 6.x+. Personally I use a old jailbroken iphone 4 if I’m using a atv 2/3 on iOS 6.x+ or just bring my jailbroken atv2 on iOS 5.3 only when away from my server (e.g. vacation).

Is it possible to install on a jailbroken atv to access myplex (similar to ios functionality on an ipad) without needing DNS redirects or a static ip for the host computer?
