Plexconnect over WAN

Hi,

 

Has anyone had Plexconnect working over WAN?? All the posts I have read all seem have it working over a local network there is the ATVsettings.cg file in the Plexconnect folder where you can enter your MyPlex username and password but I cant seem to get it to work.

 

Any ideas please??

- ATVSettings.cfg is maintained by PlexConnect - it stores the options from aTV->PlexConnect->Settings. You shouldn't need to edit it manually.

- WAN is kind of unsupported (officially) as you usually have a local PMS running anyways. Check wahlman's guides, I think he would be your best bet.

Thanks my friend, I have managed to get it working over WAN and I am going to post a full tut on how I did it, Thanks you for everyone that has been helpful.

I have just got to overcome one last problem and that is if I power the ATV down it looses the Myplex sign in so I have to sign in again to connect to my server.

Anyone any idea's

I have just got to overcome one last problem and that is if I power the ATV down it looses the Myplex sign in so I have to sign in again to connect to my server.

You need to shut it down cleanly for settings to save.

Do NOT post a tutorial for it as it involves exposing the DNS server in PlexConnect to the outside world, this will get hijacked and used to attack websites.
The only way you should be using this method is if you use your own DNS server and lock it down (or use a filter to do similar)!!!

If you are using this method because you had issues getting PlexConnect to run on the jailbroken ATV2 device hang fire as I am testing the readme and an update will be going out soon.

Option 1 use @baa’s method to install plexconnect on a jailbroken atv2 then sign into myplex which will make your device completely portable since it now has owned and shared libraries. This method allows you to take your atv2 by itself anywhere and it will seem as if you are at home.


Option 2 use @baa’s method with owned and shared libraries and bring another device with you that hosts plexconnect to a remote location so you can sign into myplex this is now built-into plexconnect.


These are the easiest, safest, most recommended methods. Everything you are asking has already been implemented using myplex that now uses “owned” and “shared” libraries. Neither of these methods require any ports to be open on any router anywhere you go.

Yeah no problem I understand what you both say, there is no need to post anything!!, just a note on the shutting down cleanly for the settings to save, I have done that and my myplex username and password is saved even if I unplug the atv and power it back up but I have to sign in again for it to recognise my PMS.

Any idea’s please??

I have no idea what you have done. I have installed plexconnect on two atv2s on ios 5.2 & 5.3 without any issues. Maybe restore and follow the instructions again? Seems like they have fixed the permission errors so you should be able to skip the chmod +x parts.

Did you not read what f00b4r said? If you want to use plexconnect over the wan just use myplex.


If it’s a atv2 on ios 5.x jb use the .deb I created in here post #199.

If it’s a atv3 bring a plexconnec host with you to the remote site and sign into myplex.

yes, i use myplex. But every time I restart the PMS or the ATV2, I have to log in and type the user/pw again to myplex.

My ATV2 is the latest version, and is not jailbroken, and using Plexconnect.

If your aTV2 was on 5.3 you could jb and install plexconnect directly on it. Did you ever save your .shsh? Looks like apple stopped signing ios 5.3 finally.

I guess I could jb it. I had it jb for a long time. But I prefer not to, so I can update it anytime. I have done it before, but recently moved the PMS into a new PC, and I forgot how.

I have to do the CTRL + C.  ---to have a clean shut down.

Where did you get that info from? One of the main sites for checking this is still showing it being signed.

I use PlexConnect over a WAN by setting up a VPN between two routers (one where the PMS lives, and one where the ATV lives). 

If you have the hardware and the chops to do that, and decent upstream bandwidth on the end where the PMS lives, it works great.

That is definitely a secure method if you know how to do it but it is overkill if you want to access a remote PMS but are able run a PlexConnect instance local to the ATV, that is what My Plex is built for :)

Can you please explain how did you do a clean shutdown? ctrl + c on apple tv doesnt do anything.....thanks!

Using any device that has a ssh app or something just ssh to aTV2 then type root then alpine to login. Once you become root start plexconnect manually then once it’s running press ctrl + c.


I use the app server auditor on my non aTV ios devices to connect to my atv2 or terminal to ssh from my mac to my atv2. How are you starting plexconnect on your atv2 manually or using launchctl?

Its starts automatically. I guess while installing it, I installed it as a daemon. I checked it by disconnecting the power chord and pluggin it back. When the atv screen loads, Plexconnect is already there. How would i stop the already running process and then start plexconnect manually in order to shut it down cleanly?
