PlexHTPC is unresponsive after Switching everything On in the Morning

Server Version#: 1.41.9.9961
Player Version#: 1.71.0.334

When I Turn On everything in the Morning, PlexHTPC is unresponsive, sometimes I am able to Start Music Playback but most Times I am not.

All Media is Stored on a Synology Nas which is On 24/7.

I am also unable to Back out of the Play Screen or do anything else, the only way to regain control is to Close PlexHTPC and Restart it.

I have enclosed the most recent PlexHTPC Log.

Plex HTPC.log (6.4 MB)

Thanks in advance

Hello all

@MovieFan

Apologies for calling You in on this.

I have been doing some investigating into this, as yet, no joy.

This is what is happening:

I am Playing Music in PlexHTPC and decide to go to Bed at 23:00.

I Pause the Music and Turn Off the AVR and the TV, the HTPC stays On 24/7.

When I return to it in the Morning, the Clock is showing, approximately, 23:30 and the UI is Unresponsive requiring PlexTPC to be Closed and Re-Opened.

I have tried Rolling Back PlexHTPC to an Earlier Version but the Issue is still there.

Sleep Timers are all Disabled.

I am at a loss.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

Does it do this if you turn things off for just a few minutes or an hour? If it doesn’t get triggered with these shorter times, my guess would be some power saving feature affecting htpc. I’ll check your logs later and see if i find anything.

Hello @MovieFan

Thanks for visiting, it is appreciated.

I know it is fine for an Hour as I have Tested that.

I will see how it does overnight, I am going to Bed at 22:40 and will see how things stand in the Morning.

I decided to Re-Build my HTPC from Scratch with regards to Windows 11 which I did Yesterday so everything is ‘Clean’ including All Power Saving Features.

Prior to the Re-Build all of the Power Saving Features were Disabled, as far as I am aware.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

Hello @MovieFan

I Turned Everything On This Morning at 08:11.

The PlexHTPC Window was a Quarter Size and the UI was Frozen, also, the Clock shows 22:51 as shown in the Attached Image.

I have also enclosed the Log for this Session, Zipped as it was too large to Upload, hopefully something can be found in it.

I don’t see anything in the logs around the time the clock froze. The logs do indicate the app noticed the AVR and display being disconnected at 22:40 then reconnect at 8:11 the next morning. The app is still running fine so this is some sort of visual glitch. This could be the video player not playing nice when things get disconnected. Do you have a log from when you do this for a shorter period and you don’t get this issue? I’d like to see if there is a difference in the logs.

Another possibility could be with pausing the playback. While paused, the app keeps trying to connect to your server to update the progress. You can see these attempts in your log. Do you see this issue if you stop playback instead of pausing it?

1 other possibility is that explorer.exe crash. I’ve seen explorer crashes causing issues with other programs. That first crash with the taskbar. I’ve heard of that crash happening when you have multiple monitors. Do you have multiple monitors with this setup? If so, is HTPC running on the second monitor? HTPC has had issues on a 2nd monitor. Moving it to the primary monitor usually fixes those issues.

Hello @MovieFan

I just followed these Steps:

Cleared the Logs
Started PlexHTPC
Shuffle the Music
Pause Music
Switched Off AVR and TV
Count to 10
Switch On AVR and TV
Play Screen is Full Screen and UI is not Frozen
Resume Play for a Few Seconds
Pause
Close HTPC

These are the Logs:

Plex HTPC.log (306.6 KB)

Overnight, Tonight, I will Stop Playback rather than Pause and see what happens.

I only have One Monitor (TV) and there is no Dedicated GPU, I only use the Embedded GPU of the Intel i7 12700K.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

Hello @MovieFan

I Switched Off the AVR and TV whilst I went out in the Garden to do some Weeding.

I came back approximately Half an Hour Later and Switched On the AVR and TV to be presented with a Black Screen.

Having a Quick Look at the Log it mentions ‘Display 2’, there is no ‘Display 2’.

I have attached the Log here:

Plex HTPC.log (412.5 KB)

Thanks in advance

Hello @MovieFan

I forgot to Stop the Music Playback Last Night instead of just Pausing it, I will Stop Playback Tonight and Post the Results Tomorrow.

One thing though is that the Explorer Crash overnight seems to be consistent, it happened again Last Night.

Thanks

Kevin

Hello @MovieFan

Just a Quick Update.

I seem to have Fixed the Explorer Crash, it looks to have been caused by some Shell Extensions that I was not aware of, apparently Installed with Adobe.

Whilst Explorer.exe did not Crash Overnight, PlexHTPC was just an unresponsive Black Screen This Morning.

This is the Log:

Plex HTPC.1.log (564.2 KB)

I will try Stopping Playback Tonight, I just wanted to Fix the Explorer Crash First.

Thanks

Kevin

Hello @MovieFan

Well, Last Night, I Stopped Music Playback and left PlexHTPC on the Music Library Screen before Switching Off the AVR and TV.

When I Switched everything On This Morning the UI was Frozen.

I did Select the Shuffle Icon, which did Start Playback but the UI did not change to the Play Screen and the Small Album Icon did not appear in the Upper Right of the Screen.

I was also able to Press Space to Pause and Resume Playback, however, I was unable to Back Out of the Music Library or do any other Action.

This is the Log:

Plex HTPC - Music Stopped.log (719.8 KB)

Hope it Helps.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

Like I mentioned in another thread of yours, F5 might be a better/faster way to get back up and running after turning everything back on. Do you have a Screen Saver option enabled? If so, what is your selected Screen Saver type?

I don’t have a setup with an AVR so I won’t be able to attempt to reproduce. I have grabbed your logs and filed an internal issue for tracking. Sorry that you’re experience these issues but thank for reporting them.

Hello @Atomatth

Screen Saver is Disabled.

I think I am making progress with this Issue of PlexHTPC being unresponsive in the Morning.

When I Switched On the AVR and TV This Morning, PlexHTPC was not Frozen and I was able to Resume Playback without Issue.

Obviously, working Once is not really proof that it is Fixed so I shall see how it is Tomorrow Morning.

I think I managed to resolve the Issue with the Screen being Resized to the Top Left Quarter of the Screen by following these Steps:

1 Open Registry Editor (as Admin) to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\

2 Delete all entries in this Path.

3 Restart PC.

4 After Restart, re-open Registry Editor to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\

There should be one Registry entry.

Click on Tree Arrow, then Click on Second Arrow to View the Values.

By clicking on each 00 the values will be displayed on the right side of Registry Editor.

Note that there are some Value Pairs that match the Resolution of your Display.

5 Switch Off AVR and then Switch it On again.

6 Open Registry Editor to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\

There will now be a Second Entry.

This is a Dummy Monitor Entry created by Windows for when a Monitor is not present, i.e. when I Switch Off the AVR.

It has the same Value Pairs as before, but with incorrect Resolutions for the Display.

In my case the Values were for 1920 x 1080, hence why PlexHTPC was shrunk to a Quarter Screen as my Display is 3840 x 2160.

7 Change the values in the Dummy Monitor Registry Key to match the Real Monitor Resolution, i.e. 3840 x 2160 rather than 1920 x 1080..

8 Restart

I have not had the Issue with PlexHTPC being Shrunk to Quarter Screen Size since I made the above changes.

It has been frustrating trying to sort these Issues as my HTPC is nothing special with regards to Configuration:

PC > AVR > TV
Windows 11 Clean Install
Plex Server
Plex HTPC
Microsoft Office 365
Adobe Lightroom (Classic)
Adobe Photoshop

As stated above, I seem to have made some progress with PlexHTPC being unresponsive in the Morning so I will see how it is Tomorrow.

I also tracked down an Issue that seems to be related to .Net, Installing the Latest Version of .Net seems to have ‘Fixed’ that, however, it may be too early to be sure.

Thanks

Kevin

Hello all

Just a Quick Update.

For the Third Morning in a row, I have Switched On the AVR and TV in the Morning and Plex HTPC has not been Frozen and Music Playback has been able to be Resumed, from Pause, without Issue.

Hopefully I have not just Jinxed it but it looks as though I have now sorted this Issue.

Thanks

Kevin

Hello @AtomathAtomath

Apologies for the Late Reply.

Unfortunately, I am still having Issues.

You say that you do not have an AVR, however, you should be able to replicate this Issue by just Switching Off your Display Device.

Also, when the Plex UI Freezes, F5 Refreshes the UI, however, it is still Frozen and will not accept any Input.

Thanks in advance

Hello all

Well, I think thst I may have made some progress, however, it may be too soon to tell, for sure.

I Created an Exclusion in Windows Security for the Plex HTPC and Plex Server Program Directories and for the last Two Nights, Switching Everythng On in the Morning, Plex HTPC has Not been unresponsive.

It is Only Two Nights but it looks like progress.

I will keep an eye on it and Hopefully it continues to work.

Thanks

Kevin

Hello all

I am probably going to regret this but…..

It has been One Week since I added the Exclusions for the Plex HTPC and Plex Server Program Directories to WIndows Security and in that Time I have not experienced One Crash, at all.

It seems that my Issue is Fixed, however…..

Any ideas as to what, within the Program Directories, could be causing the Crashes overnight so I can narrow the Windows Security Exclusions?

Thanks in advance

Kevin
