PLEXREADER: Comics, Books, PDFs

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HIT THE 'VOTE' BUTTON TO VOTE FOR THIS.

PLEXREADER, PLEXSTORE, PLEXSYNC!
A lot of people use there tablets as E-Readers It would be awesome if plex could free up much needed disk space by hosting these files. select a zip, rar, epub, pdf,or other book file type and it downloads to you device. open using a plex made Ereader or select a Reader of your choice. each time you select a new book it can download and while your reading it plex deletes the previously selected book unless plex synced (This means more flexpass sales for the company).

A lot of people read comics as illustrated by just how many android and ios apps there are just for this. But those apps are limited to device hardware storage space unlike plex.

An unlimited amount of space for books to free up space for apps. There are people who don't know about or use plex that would buy the app just for this.

Finally for the people that say "hey its only a 50MB file just download the comic you want to read that day". One of the great features of plex is it keeps track of not just where you left off in a tv series but lets you resume at the moment you stopped watching the last episode. this feature could be referred to as "bookmarking" and a comic or book, series or one off would definitely benefit from the "BOOKmarking" feature we use on videos. lets bring all media to our media server.

PLEASE GIVE ME BOOK SUPPORT! ^_^

Update: Was in informed that plex is intagrating xbmc. If this is true they will already have full zip/rar/cbz/cbr suport. This makes epub and pdf the only files left to suport. I would still like to see a books section with or without epub and pdf to view my comics.

To be fair you should include at least one option in your poll for people not interested in reader support.I for one, wouldn’t be interested at all and have the Plex team rather focus on media support.

I must agree with mfrelink, let e-readers be e-readers and media centers be media centers.

And compared to (pay solution, i know  ) comixology, Plex wouldn’t be able to do the job half as well

Let keep the focus on fully implementing the XBMC code, so we can use the features that comes with it, and ironing out the kinks of the Plex code.

They are implementing XMBC into plex? This is good to hear because XMBC already supports comics. It wont be hard for them to add epub and PDF if they decided too.

Digital picture/image display in detail
XBMC handles all common digital picture/image formats with the options of panning/zooming and slideshow with "Ken Burns Effect", with the use of CxImage open source library code. XBMC can also handle CBZ (ZIP) and CBR (RAR) comic book archive files, this feature lets users view/read, browse and zoom the pictures of comics pages these contain without uncompressing them first.[5]

That would be a definite bonus to be able to add my eComics and eBooks to plex. I have quite a collection and being able to read them from anywhere would be very nice. I certainly hope they will support that part of XBMC.

I think they will as it’s one of the coolest features of XMBC to play video rar and zip files. Think of the hard drive space that could be saved! If you already have the file support from XMBC I would think building the section would be alot easier. Most comic apps just show the first picture in the file (always a cover) and list file name. So I would think adding comics/books would add content for very little coding compared to other projects as most of the file suport will already be there from XMBC (less epub and PDF).

Books/Comics section: next PlexPass feature :3?

I maintain my eBook library with the free Calibre eBook management software. I have over 10,000 books in the library currently, but I don't need to carry them with me on my reading device. Calibre has a built-in server you can turn on, that allows me to download books from it anywhere my device can connect to the net.

I have both the Calibre server, and my Plex server running on the same machine with no problems between them. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd want to add over 10,000 books to Plex just to be able to download them from there when Calibre already does that, and so much more. But I guess anything is possible. lol

This feature would allow Plex to be the only/last media server anyone needs... I really would like to see this feature, even if all it showed was ePub and cbr!

I would like this more for the same reason that I like Macs, integration.  I would love to be able to access all my media from one application.  It would just be nice for the completist in me.

Stanza already provides a reader for the iOS platform and links to the calibre library. PlexReader would be something very similar. Great idea to get this into the all-in-one media server.

Sounds cool but what is really sounds like is you want personal cloud storage that is accessible anywhere.

Do you really need Plex to be the reader? Perhaps use one of the many available mobile reader apps and link to any of many free and non-free cloud services. Comics/Manga/Books do not require a constant stream and are therefore not really bandwidth dependent. QoS for serving them is not really an issue.

I'm not sure Plex is the best solution for serving that type of media. Its like putting chrome hub-cap spinners on a NASCAR stock car. It might look cool but doesn't add any real value or help the car's primary goal - in fact, it will likely make it worse.

P.S. - I'm sorry for poo-pooing your idea

Do you really need Plex to be the media player? Why not use Netflix and YouTube for your videos and Pandora for your music?

There’s no way right now to build a library of your books (comic or not) on a central server you control and view them in a decent app on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. I’m not sure how QoS comes into this, and Plex has photo channels already, which also don’t require constant streams.

That is not necessarily correct. Calibre pretty much handles all of that, and much, much more. And best of all, like Plex, it''s free. :)

While this is true it is also false:

Calibre allows you to publish your library but it is quite limited and for my purposes it is just not doing it at all because I already have a DMZ set for a NAS and thus can't publish (access from the internet) the calibre server as I can only access the NAS webpage and this because Calibre only works on computer and not on NAS (as for the program itself, while all the books can be stored on a NAS).

Morever, Calibre can only publish the library it is currently set in. I do have several libraries, one with more than 5000 books and some other as large. To not let Calibre choke on so much books, I divided my ebooks in various libraries, just like I did with Plex and my Movies, Series and Anime.

Having Plex handling the files just as it does handle to other media would allow to have a centralized point, accessible from internet anywhere, delivering all libraries of ebooks and comics as it does for the movie files. Well at least that's the dream.
