Agreed. Plex should keep it’s focus on what it does best which is letting users organize and access the users’ own content rather than providing the content.
I think this would be a great feature… no idea why people are giving out. It doesn’t have to be used by people who dont need it. I personally would really love to see this being implemented, books are easily tagged and managed like movies and TV. Cover art etc will all be available - I really really want this feature
Do you mean downvoting of the post or of the entire feature request? The actual feature request has nothing to do with DRM.
Yes, and Plex is already behind it’s competitors (real competitors, not ebook only servers) in some respects. Both Jellyfin and Emby, while still can’t read ebooks, already have the ability to organize and show metadata for a ebook library.
LOL, I think someone needs to learn to cool down a bit.
Btw, clarity helps. And especially in a feature request thread, voting and down voting is always about the feature being suggested.
Thank you for making my point. That’s exactly what’s wrong with your post about down voting as voting applies to the entire thread and there’s not voting (up or down) for individual posts. And frankly, post votes don’t really accomplish anything as it doesn’t add anything to the conversation. The actual thread vote usually isn’t important either in here it’s the main indicator of support for the suggested feature.
Nope, argue all you want, the closest you can do on this forum software is liking a post. Which doesn’t do anything to the rating of the post or push it further up the rating. It definitely isn’t a voting function which is available on some (though decreasing) other forum software. And it’s definitely because of the type of argument from posts like yours why many forum developers have not bothered by actual post voting anymore.
Just take a chill pill and stop taking this thread off topic. All this BS post from you just because I was clarifying upvotes for a post. All your desperate arguing doesn’t magically make it able to make post voting appear.
Oh, since all you do is rehash the same stuff over and over again anyways, Welcome to my ignore list!
I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen a Plex store. I felt like Plex’s natural progression was gonna be media distribution.
Instead they tied themselves to a sinking ship like Tidal andnon existence freeware providers.
Why would it lockdown content? That’s just fear mongering. I perfer the convenience of buying a movie or TV show straight from Plex and it gets stored in my media server. What’s is so predatory about Plex providing their own media distribution to supplement their services. I sure as hell would rather pay for a movie through Plex than the alternatives. It’s simplicity. I wanna watch a movie, but I don’t have. Well, that starts a whole process, but if Plex just had a convenient store. I just buy it. Let download to my sever in whstever encrypted nonsense that it is and be happy. I have been a Plex Lifetime for over 5 years. So, i haven’t spemt a dime on Plex. It’s time for Plex to evolve.
Man, this was asked in 2013, has it been alluded to or teased in any way?
Thanks, after try many server applications (use ubooquity some years), Komga work very fine maby if I need to change all folder organisation of my comics.
Very nice software.
Plex… no news in the last 6 years. In 2034 normaly the dev team work for a solution
+2 votes from me. Devs, let’s do this. Almost EVERYONE in this thread wants this with the exception of a handful of purists. Can you guys just eyeball a cost, say for example, $10K, and then open a crowdfunding option and let us know so that we can pay for it? I’m sure everyone of us here would gladly give $10 bucks per vote. That’s 15K.
Agreed! I would like to see both Calibre and Kindle come to Plex.
Calibre can read even *.cbz (comics), and if Kindle got added, I would like it to be able to do Kindle’s Immersion Reading. For now, I just mirror my phone to the living room TV for Kindle Immersion Reading for books. For movies and music, I use the Plex channel I added on our Roku to play stuff from the Plex Media Server on my PC.
I also have a Guleek Windows 10 mini-PC I can hook to the TV to run Windows and do Plex or Calibre. On the mini-PC, I can also run BlueStacks Android emulator and run Kindle for Android inside BlueStacks and have it do Immersion Reading displayed on the TV through the HDMI output from the mini-PC. I control the mini-PC from across the room with a Logitech wireless mouse & keyboard combo.
It all works and the mini-PC is only about the size of a cigarette holder and uses only about 10-15 watts. I would MUCH rather just have the apps all in Plex that works fine through our Roku.
+1 would love this feature!
Good Idea. Features crowdfounding. I support this idea.
+1 for this idea
I really want to read books with plex !
This is a thought regarding possibility of proper support audiobook and adding ebook management and reading:
I often will switch between reading an ebook, and listening to the audio book version. If I’m out an about, obviously I’m listening, but at home, relaxing, it’s nice to read. But this can be a bit tricky, and usually I can only manage this with books that have short stories or chapters so that I know where I left off.
Unfortunately to automate this, you need to have a central server for your media to know where you are in the audio or the ebook, to pick you up where you left off from the alternate medium. I think Amazon/Kindle/Audible ecosystem does this, but not sure, as I don’t use them.
There’s a super interesting open-source project called “aeneas” (https://www.readbeyond.it/aeneas/)) that can take text and audio, and provide a mapping between the two. I played with a bit myself, and it does work.
If an independent e-reader or audio player app wanted to tackle this synchronization, they’d have to be able to share the position data with a partner app of the opposite medium. Plex (if they wanted to tackle this) would be well poised to implement this, since they’d have all the pieces: server, audio player, and e-book reader.
This is no small feature request, as it would require:
- Proper audio book support
- Managing an ebook library.
- An ebook reader app intgrated with Plex.
- The aeneas glue to provide the mapping for an audiobook / ebook pair, to keep both in sync on the server.
This is quite pie-in-the-sky, but thought I’d toss out the idea, as I doubt I’ll ever try to implement it myself.
I was looking for a CBR/CBZ plugin for Plex when I came across this. I haven’t had time to try it, but what’s wrong with ComicReader? I haven’t looked at the source code yet, but it might be a good starting point rather than building from scratch.
Hello ,
I found this tuto to add audiobook in Plex, maybe it can help some people.
Cheers.
+1 for this
I want to read books on plex
