So are we getting this feature or what ???
This really would be great.
Again I discover a good feature missing in Plex (but not in similar multimedia web servers) requested since several years âŠ
I can add my vote but it wonât change anything. Not even sure Plex team get access to this forum.
This would be an amazing idea. ExceptâŠI prefer to only use e-readers when going digital. Streaming your book to phone/tablet would be an awesome feature but then you have all that light hitting your face as youâre trying to read. It just isnât the same. I like the idea though. Just would never use it. Plus, ebooks donât really take up a lot of space. I have so many and havenât come close to filling up my Kindle.
Including books and PDF format would be amazing, one place for all of my media, cheers Rich
Yes, yes, and yes. At minimum an Epub and pdf reader, with bookmarking, annotation, and resume capabilities. Ideally, comics inclusive with .cbr/.cbz. The unofficial plug-ins are very buggy now that theyâre not supported/updated anymore. This is my #1 Plex request. (#2 is better audio book integration).
I canât get ComicReader to work. Is that the same for everyone else?
Would be a game changer if they incorporated this and audiobook support into plex.
I would love to have one platform to host all my media. Would be great to read my ecomics and ebooks on the move with plex and audiobooks as well.
You can add audio books as a separate music library and then just tick the Store Track Progress button.
I have several audio books that detect metadata and match properly like this.
I would love to have my comic library back in plex, I used the plugin until plugin support ended and then I moved to a ubooquity / Calibre setup but its a bit clunky and takes forever to add and remove books to it works well otherwise - I even have a plex theme to make it look at home.
You can add audio books as a separate music library and then just tick the Store Track Progress button.
I used to do that but found if you had an audiobook that was one big file youâll be quite a way through the book say 7/8th for example, near the end but not finished and for whatever reason you stop listening. Plex would assume the file was played and not save your place. If I could get around that then I would add my audiobooks to the library again.
As for comic books and ebooks, I have attempted to use calibre but its so clunky I find it far too frustrating to bother. I may have another attempt as its been a while since I last used it. Not tried ubooquity so may give that a go too.
+1 Need EREADER and Comics!!
Still no news on this after years of wanting it added to plex
+1000. Itâs sad that there doesnât seem to be much of an official response to all the interest, either in the yes or no direction. And if itâs no, then why stop supporting plugins/channels that offered this functionality at one point? Please at least go back to supporting the plugins/channels!
Can someone with the Plex Admin/Mod/Dev team respond and let us know if weâre wasting our time requesting this? It has literally been over 7 years (8 years next month) since this was suggested, and this suggestion still has not been approved or denied. I fail to see how Plex would struggle to implement ebooks. Movies, TV shows, and music are all (in my opinion) much more difficult formats to work with than ebook formats. Yet all of those formats are supported. What is the holdup with ebook support?
Again, youâre being disingenuous here. Youâre saying âthat there is a way to get what you wantâ, but youâre discarding what we want. We want a centralized hub where all of our streaming content can be located, be that movies, TV shows, music, or ebooks.
I honestly donât understand what youâre doing here. If you donât use ebooks that is fine. Donât vote for the suggestion. But instead of ignoring a suggestion that doesnât impact you (if you donât use ebooks then you just wouldnât use that functionality) youâre actively fighting against people who are wanting this functionality. There is no reason for you to be doing this. Thatâs like someone asking my favorite restaurant to consider adding hamburgers to their menu, and since I donât like hamburgers Iâm going to tell them they better not add them even though I can just not order and eat the dang hamburgers.
P.S. I love hamburgers. I used hamburgers for the purpose of the analogy, not because hamburgers are gross. They are delicious.
EDIT: I am a Plex Pass member as you can see. I donât use the Live TV option. I will likely never use the Live TV option. Iâm not mad at Plex for adding the Live TV option. Itâs just functionality that Plex has that I ignore.
It could be also that Plex is thinking there are going to be Issues from a legal view point. Many of these publishing companies are predatory in nature when it comes to their property
As opposed to the non-predatory RIAA/MPAA who never defend their property?
For all the naysayers here, thereâs clearly a lot of interest and your arguments against it because it will take away Plex teamâs focus on Media are invalid.
Plex was a local media streaming platform at itâs inception, now it streams Live TV, and has branched out into several other ventures, some successful, others not. Before you claim that Live TV is just an extension of Plexâs core functionality, remember that each feature has to be planned out and new solutions to unique challenges created.
Adding functional eReader feature is both a draw to new users and potentially new plex pass subscribers, and requires similar development effort to the several other new features of Plex that havenât compromised Plexâs core functionality.
This. The best way for Plex to thrive and survive is to adapt. Emby has ebooks on their docket. If Plex decides ebooks arenât worth it then thereâs another software that people will migrate towards that gives them what they want. Thatâs how businesses operate. Sure, they stick to movies, TV, and music. But that only works out if their competitors do the same, and one of their primary competitors has already said this is on the docket for them.
A pointless no demand feature Plex arcade coming out before EReader or Audiobook is just sad manâŠ
At this point, you guys just need to address the elephant in the room and just say that you have no intentions of doing an Ereader.
Also, instead of wasting everyoneâs time with ways to create cashflow. Just go into media distribution. The only other option is reboot the Plex platform with a Plex 2 to get people off of lifetime subs in favor of monthly subscription.
Plex devs do realize that no one wants this, right? You can play them for free in hundreds of different places.
But we canât get something as simple as a comic reader?
How much easier would it be to add a reader function than try to get video game streaming working across multiple platforms?
