While I’m glad we finally received an answer, I also can’t agree with the thinking here. It’s a very obvious complementary feature that aligns perfectly with what Plex does already.
Assuming photos support isn’t going away, it’s basically that same feature with pagination and position syncing, and maybe a few additional file formats. It’s not even complicated, there used to be a plugin that added this support that looked like it took a day to write.
I know that emby is working on this feature, the day it’s releasing I will switch over. I am really sad to give up hope, but I think if they don’t even consider it after 10 YEARS it will probably never happen. I love the ease of use that plex provide, but if I need to switch to emby and pay a yearly subscription to have a domain name and get through the hassle of setting it up, I will do it, and I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks that way.
Just wanted to hop in here and let you know that not all hope should be lost here. This isn’t something that we are currently working on, but there are some of us that still believe in adding support for this type of media. What we need to do to make it reality is to find a way to design and build it in a sustainable way that we can properly support going forward. It is a big challenge and you won’t see anything in the first half of 2024, but we will do our best to at least keep (more) communication going here as we work through the challenges and roadblocks around this request.
To bump this request with some real world news: Comixology will be discontinued my Amazon on 4. December. Presumably, people will be looking for alternatives
Just here to same the same, I started collecting open source books and thought man there has to be a better system then this! Then I thought hold on Plex is my go to for everything else so why not this?
This would be an Instant Hit as all other options have sucked so far. Reminds me of when I first started backing up my DVD’s years ago and found plex.
I’ve been monitoring this thread for a few years now and I’m happy to see that there are Plex employees actively responding to comments finally, but I’m still amazed at how this feature STILL to this day hasn’t been implemented after all time time.
Plex is a wonderful media server service and you’d think that adding more media types would be the focus on further development. And then I saw this blog post from last month that seems like they’re going to be focusing on adding a social media aspect to Plex?
Cmon. Nobody wants this. https://www.plex.tv/blog/discover-together/
My idea of the ebook/comic reader extension:
It could be a plugin for the server sold separetly. (like Plex Arcade)
It could contain a book store where users could purchase books from/through Plex (and upload own books too).
Thanks McWanke! I have been exploring Jellyfin recently. Its a great program that supports ebooks and comics but I think Plex just works better. REALLY hoping the brass at Plex can get behind this.
I think you need to let the people in charge know that the path of things they are adding to Plex NO ONE wants. Social media, watching together, all that stuff. This is a MASSIVE want for many of us that paid for Plex and as of your post 5 months ago, it’s not even on the radar. I saw McWanke said it “could” be moving toward maybe happening but come on.
This is a massive want for most Plex users. Tell them that.
I built my own little Plex plugin. It works very well but I can understand very well why it is not being worked on here. It’s an incredible effort to tag the comics. So that they can be found. But take a look.
I’m always working on it. And at the moment it only runs on the Mac. If you are interested then I can keep you up to date!
Hi derlordhelmchen
How can you make a plugin for plex? plugin support is removed a long time ago.
Is this development on git? What kind of formats are supported?
cbz, cbr, pdf, epub ?
I have built a complete app around the app. That’s how I solved the problem of having both Plex inside and my own plugins. Everything is supported. From PDFs, CBR, CBZ etc. The preliminary work is just to tag the files correctly. Here I also have scripts that do the rest. Also the description of the comics I use ChatGPT to get more information about each comic
I have also integrated my own emulator plugin. By the way, it looks like this. Here the ChatGPT technique is mega interesting because it also brings in background information about the programming.
At the moment, I’ve done it completely for myself. But I’m always working on it and building on it. Let’s see how far I get with it. I’m also thinking about making an iPad / iPhone app to read the comics. I don’t like it on the computer monitor at all. There will also be a favorites list.
