PLEXREADER: Comics, Books, PDFs

Unfortunately not yet. I have to automate some things so that everyone can use it. Example If you want to add a comic you need a special formatting so that it recognizes it correctly. Once formatted, it always works 1000%. I have created a shell script for this which helps. But it’s not nice yet and currently Mac exclusive!

Version update

New

  • Background image is now also loaded dynamically and with beautiful transitions
  • Favorites list for comics
  • Console information including TOPS and FLOPS of the console
  • Show more suggestions for each game

Update

  • Revised design
  • Type adapted as with Plex
  • In the list there is a mouseover effect for comics and games with magnification effect

This is still a feature request thread.

Maybe Plex can copy the things he is creating. He is basically giving Plex the roadmap on what can be done, since he is doing it. It is not release notes, since he has actually not release anything. People have been asking for this for years. He might be willing to give you the code if you would incorporate it and maintain it. Just a thought.

Just wanted to add my voice to this request, thank you!

We’d really love for this to become a focus. There are of course financial challenges re income streams etc. and we do understand.

Help keep the hope alive for Plex to be the last word in all media storage. It already puts practically everything else on market in the shade and this would be an immense final nail in the coffin of your rivals

Seems like it would be really easy to update the photos library to support comics that are just loose image files.

Currently, I just put the images in a folder with the name of the comic. From there I can just select the folder in plex and swipe through. This gets the job done, but it would just be nice to always have a viewable indicator on the screen of the progress made reading the comic. For example, the app could just indicate that I’m on image 10 of 50(I know the web app already kind of does this but the mobile apps don’t).

It would also be nice if we could add tags to the folder itself instead of just individual images and enable support to view the full poster in the library tab instead of getting the box crop of the poster.

You might want to add a vote to this one:

I did. I made this post to point out how easy it would be to make the tweaks I mentioned in the photos library to support this in the meanwhile.

Introduction

Hello everyone! I know I’m not very active on this forum, but I’ve got an interesting idea to share. Before this I just want to say that I love that there were updates for Plex Music, some of which were showed in this forum post of mine.

Plex Music isn’t perfect yet, so I really hope more updates will be there in the future. If you need people to test something about Plex Music feel free to DM me. I’m also able to ask the DutchHipHop Discord for help, since I know some people there also use Plex and run against the same things I mentioned.

But without further ado…

Plex Books

I like using Plex to have my audio and video on one place, since there is no one place which hosts all the things I like. Some things are medium-exclusive, like cd’s or dvd’s for example, some things are promotional media and other things are just online only. This combined with the fact that I also make my own stuff makes Plex ideal for having everything together. Plex supports audio, video, images. Makes sense, right?

So why not books?

Reading material comes in different sizes on different platforms too. Think about books, magazines, comics, pdf-files, gaming-manuals, guides, flyers, and so on. These can come from scans, archives, ebooks, and your own stuff from Word for example.

In the hobbies I like there’s a lot of material, but this might be ideal for school and studies too. Think about ebooks, summaries, readers, maybe even PowerPoints and handouts. Also reading your library while you’re on the go, plex is ideal for that too, that way you don’t have to carry everything with you.

Examples

I made some examples in photoshop. The first one is an example for a magazine. As you can see the Plex-layout is perfect for this one. For the ‘seasons’ I grouped them together per year, with the first cover for thumbnail. Once you click on a season/year you go to a sub-menu with all the issues from that year.

This second example is for a comic series. This series has 7 comics, so a sub-menu for a year isn’t necessary. For the title of the individual comics I used the issue number (issue 01, issue 02, issue 03, special 01, exclusive). For the subtitle I used the release date (or the month and the year only, when the day wasn’t available). If the actual release has a name that could be displayed on the page for that specific comic.

I also think that it would be a good idea to include the following information on the first page:

  • Publisher
  • Country and/or Language

The last example is for the menu with all the releases. I made it so that below the poster it shows the amount of releases (9 comics, 285 magazines, 1 book). I’m not sure if it would be better to group everything together, or to keep single releases (like books, solo pdf’s) and releases with multiple issues (like comics, magazines) separated . Mainly because the solo-releases don’t need an extra sub-menu and I immediately think of the difference Plex has between shows and movies.

Outro

I also posted this on Reddit (Reddit-post), because I feel like there are more people over there, then on this forum. That way you’ve got more feedback!

Edit 1: Speaking of which I also found this post from januari 2013 from u/evora for the ‘PlexReader’ which has 2,5k upvotes, so there is cleary a want for this. Also within two seconds of posting this on r/Plex there is already someone who thinks this would be awesome (comment link).

Thanks for reading!

Hope you like this idea!

Sincerely,

Cinnamon

I suppose you might want to read this existing suggestion and comment/vote in that thread in order to avoid distracting dispersing votes.

Therefore closing this thread as a duplicate.

I know there are work arounds’ for audio books (because I use them), but I think it would be nice if we could also use Plex to organize and display our written words of choice as well.

Audio book support has also been requested a lot already.

I am sad to see this has been requested 11 years ago and still nothing.

Hopefully someone jumps on this when the release the open API. I’ve been wanting to see all my media in one place for a while.

I’ve been working with several other content servers running parallel with Plex to get the job tried Ubooquity, Kavita, Calibre-Web none quite get the complete experience. Kavita is awesome for Manga, comics, and Books but horrendous for TTRPG books. Calibre is ok. Ubooquity worked great for PDFs like TTRPGs but has no support and is a memory hog being built in Java.

I liked the idea of Plex Arcade but could never get it to work properly.

This would be amazing! Exactly what I was thinking would complete Plex.

Plex add support for ebooks!

Big hopes that the API is genuinely designed to empower the community to develop these kinds of things, and not just another way to collect our data to sell to the highest bidder.
