PLEXREADER: Comics, Books, PDFs

I really hope, that PLEX will implement support for ebooks, comics, magma, etc. We have Calibre already, but it is not the same, because it will be on your server and you can read and continue reading from every device.

bump, please add support

Have you tried Calibre-Web? It’s pretty decent.

Yes, yes, yes, i want it too.

I had not, but I was thinking about trying it.

I recently started using it myself. It’s not bad if you’re cool with reading in a browser. For that matter the in-built Calibre content server is serviceable as well. Though Calibre-Web does offer a more aesthetically pleasing frontend. I think you can set up reverse proxy options for remote browsing, but I found that setting up a VPN for my local network was a bit easier. It’s kind of a lot to set up all yourself, so I would love for someone to envelope all these features into a Plex plugin of some kind that rolls the Calibre database into PMS.

its been years and still this feature not added, i don’t even see any recognition from the devs about this topic !

There are better alternatives then Plex could probably come up with, I use Kavita with Komf plugin, you can also you Komga.

Plex isn’t an everything app, they’re having trouble being a video player app as of late.

Sad,
it’s so sad to see that this topic is still open after so many years and no ear from Plex team or moderators to listen to this demand.
I know that it is probably complex to implement such a feature but this is something that so many people are waiting for for so many years.
More of that is the way that Plex ignore this topic or just put a laconic ā€œnot in the short futureā€.

They just raised up their prices and changed licensing rules but still nothing has changed here. Only features with paid partners are put in front and unfortunatly nothing really interesting for so many of paid Plex users (money money money!!).
I have bought a full lifetime Plex license 5 or 6 years ago and i still have a running Plex server but for two years now i only use very good free an alternative.
The only reason why i keep my Plex server running is for WAN access. My alternative does not provide 2FA authentication for now.
Honestly, I am not thinking at all that Plex will do something about this topic.
They just want to gain time (and money). For me it’s over and as soon as my other provider deploys safer authentication, i will definitly shut down my Plex server.
Sorry to be rude but it is necessary to open eyes at one time.
This trip with Plex was a pleasure and it’s so sad to see that they don’t listen to their customers (clearly, they already have our money so why bother and spend it unnecessary? )

BTW, my alternative already manages CBR, pdf and other kind of book format for years. It updates very fast and listens to their community and that’s why i made my decision.
I know that everyone has his own opinion but this is just simply mine (no hate but big disappointment)

Since people keep saying there are alternatives… Which alternatives do you suggest which have the following basic features beyond ā€œit can read thingsā€?

  • Plex SSO (so that I can manage access the same place as I do for audio/video)
  • Browser support (Chrome/Firefox)
  • Desktop app support (Linux/Windows/Mac)
  • Mobile support (Android/iOS)
  • TV support (Google TV [which, as Plexamp shows, isn’t as easy as sideloading an APK for 100% functionality], Apple TV, Samsung, Roku)

I listed the platforms in the order of popularity amongst myself and those who have access to my server. Your own client mix will, of course, differ. But since I’m looking for a reader client that meets my needs, I’m not interested in debating whether my circle of people is the same as anyone else’s.

I had tried figuring out how to use a web app and wrapping it for the various platforms. But the Plex SSO bit is a challenge. I’m not entirely sure how things like Organizr and Overseerr do it, despite trying to pick apart their sources. And I’m not interested in running yet another cloud-based service to proxy authentication via a full-fledged IdP and also trying to make that work for a dozen or so people across multiple interfaces. -.-

So from my point of view, this needs to be something Plex offers. But considering that Plexamp still lacks so many features, while development seems to be focused on somehow becoming a social network as they are in general decline, I also suppose that means my reading library remains my own and won’t be shared. :frowning:

For ebooks I use Calibre, and for digital comics I use YACreader. I run both on my desktop 24/7 to serve files on my LAN, and connect to them from outside the house with my PiVPN I also have on my LAN. Both apps are great for my needs, and I honestly don’t want Plex to take their place at this point.

I gave my upvote. It’s wild how this thread is over 10 years old. I’ve tried to make alternatives with the Images section, but it’s just not good enough. It doesn’t look sleek, and nice, like a movie, or TV Show. I feel the reason not many use Images is because of how bad it’s implemented. You don’t have a whole lot of room to implement information, or to alter Metadata that can auto populate. It’s also not aesthetically pleasing. So, I hope at some point Images is improved to where we can make it look like an e-reader.

Did you complete this and is it for sale?

Ended up building my own

How did you buld that?

Sad to see that this request is over decade old now with no acknowledgment from the dev team.

Personally I don’t have anything against using calibre if it was just me wanting to read my books. But I also want to share my library with my (god bless their souls) dumbass friends who are already too incompetent to remember their Plex login as it is.

I can’t imaging having to explain to them, how to access my calibre library through an e-reader on their phones, and god knows they’re too bougie to access it through their browser let alone too dumb to just bookmark it.

Having everything in Plex, specifically one app with one user account and one password is a giant QoL feature.
