PMS 1.18.0.1913
Just upgraded Synology DS1819+ server.
Experiencing problems with a proper media deleting.
Movie cover stays visible - in release date field I’m getting “0 movies”.
Nothing helps (scanning, removing bundles, emptying trash).
Only manual delete works
Does this apply?
No - I am familiar with this announcement.
Everything worked fine with previous PMS version.
Definite bug (or few) in the most recent update - only manual delete of the cover works.
Thanks for your reply, but this is not it.
What is the procedure of “manual delete” that works?
This is sounding a lot like the need to:
- Scan files
- Empty Trash
- Clean Bundles
- Optimize Database
All of these are managed by PMS itself in Settings - Server - Library and Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks.
A. You delete the media
B. Follow the steps above -OR- have PMS do it Automatically (Settings - Server - Library)
C. Scheduled Tasks keeps the database clear after the removals.
When you will place mouse cursor on the movie cover image you will have visible three vertical dots, when you click on them you will have different options - one is to delete and this one works.
Automatic deletion process of identical movie covers does not work anymore with current PMS version.
I am running PMS on two different Synology servers.
Both servers experienced same problems after upgrading.
Yes I did all of that (see my original post).
1.San files
2.Clean Bundles
3.Optimize Database
4.Empty Trash
Automatic process during the scheduled maintenance also does not work. in this case.
Media were deleted from servers as a first step.
Problem originally started when I added new version of the same movie.
Then I deleted old movie version.
Besides all of that, Plex Team did incredible job by improving movie preview creation !!!
Another bigger issue with this new PMS update.
AVI files - multiple playback errors.
Video stops than plays again etc.
This is on Roku Ultra and Apple TV4k players - Apple handles this slightly better.
Degrading video from 1080p to 720p and even lover does not help.
Let’s do this one step at a time.
What is the exact sequence of steps you perform when deleting a piece of media from your Library?
Here we go again
Problem originally started when I added new version of the same movie.
Then I deleted old movie version.
In other words, niecemovie.720p file was already in my lib.
I added nicemovie.1080p (same title, better resolution).
Before upgrading, process was automatic and instead of creating additional cover (same graphics) there was just one cover with two versions of the movie.
I deleted old version with lover res. (nicemovie,720p from my server.
Also, before, the deleting process was automatic.
Now I ended up with two identical covers for the same movie title.
One with all metadata the other was just a cover without any metadata attached.
Just in the field where the release date was, now it was a label “0 movies”.
I followed the sequence that you mention above:
1.San files
2.Clean Bundles
3.Optimize Database
4.Empty Trash
Still nothing even after waiting for a while.
Then I run maintenance - “crazy graphic cover” was still there.
Finally I deleted this cover manually as I described above.
The reason I asked for it “all over again” was to make certain of a few points.
- Was the original in the structure:
Nice Movie (year)/
Nice Movie (year) [720].ext
- When you added the “Nice Movie 1080”, did it get added in with the other resulting in,
Nice Movie (year)/
Nice Movie (year) [720].ext
Nice Movie (year) [1080].ext
-OR-
Did you have:
Nice Movie (year) [720]/
Nice Movie (year) [720].ext
Nice Movie (year) [1080]/
Nice Movie (year) [1080].ext
-
Extremely important point here: with exception of the hidden
[hidden stuff here]
portions, were the names otherwise identical ? -
By your description of the different posters, they were not.
Am I understanding you correctly ?
I am being pedantic about this to figure out the easiest way possible to remove it.
Everything can be removed by hacking the database but that is a last resort and not how it should be done.
Normal procedure should be to remove the entire duplicate from the file system, scan and empty.
This is where I’m having a problem. I am trying to figure out why this, which works for everyone else, went sideways for you. Once I know why it went sideways, I can help you get it sorted.
There is another way
Create the names again as empty files (the touch
) command.
Let PMS think the files are there but zero length.
It will reattach itself.
After it’s reattched, delete the one you want gone.
We will go that route based on your feedback. Youre welcome to try this if you want.
if you add a new video, and it gets scanned and associated with the GUID as an existing video, it will share the same metadata. these will show up as duplicates and have the little #2 in the corner (or however many copies you have associated with the same GUID)
if your metadata agents have changed since the original file was scanned, your new file of the same movie will get a new GUID and will get potentially different metadata (from whatever the current agent provides). these will show up as the same movie but separated with potentially different images and descriptions etc
Get out of my head! lol
we could avoid this whole situation, if plex used a GUID that is not associated with any particular metadata provider.
that GUID could then be linked to multiple metadata providers, and linked back to the starting GUID when there are multiple copies of the same video.
I did some tests with the exact same media files (from backup).
Now everything works like a charm.
Under one poster, system created two movie versions.
When one version was removed - system deleted what was necessary and left just one version.
I do not now what really happened - perhaps originally I created metadata manually, by typing description and putting jpg image of the associated poster.
It was done long time ago and I do not remember this exactly as happened.
One is sure, that I had never seen before PMS changing “originally available date” to "0 movies!!!
I am using Plex for over 5 years now.
Also it’s possible that I did these changes too soon after upgrading - some background job was still going on.
The other thing was the “choking” on AVI files on both players up to the point that playback stopped with the message on TV screen “multiple playback errors”.
This was going for at least one hour - in meantime I restarted servers and players but “choking” was even worst and than suddenly everything went normal, as it should.
Anyway the movie was really nice.
Thanks for your input and help.
Only Plex God will know what it really was.
Most recent update.
Unfortunately, problems with AVI media came back.
It is not possible to watch AVIs.Pleyback stops for a while, than continues, stops again and finally stops with the error message
“Multiple playback errors”…
Now I am getting really upset with this recent PMS update !
AVI playback is a joke.
Now look what happened to some of my movie files:
I did nothing - that’s just a result of the current update during late night automatic maintenance.
Now I know what originally happened to my “niece movie”.
Same stuff.
Please note that when you will try to edit this you will notice that movie became now TV show without any associated metadata.
This was before Poseidon Adventure 2005.
Please do the following:
- Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
- Verify DEBUG logging enabled, VERBOSE logging disabled
- Start playback of the AVI
- If it fails within the first 30 seconds, good. If not, stop at the 30 second mark
- Wait 30 seconds for the logs to settle
- Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
- Attach the ZIP file it gives you here.
Regarding the screenshots above, those look to me like your PMS is in need of some good basic maintenance and media curation which we can discuss later after resolving the AVI issue.
Expired
Did you edit the contents of the ZIP file after it was downloaded?
If so, then I will ask you to repeat the process and not edit it.
As shown in the attached image, you will see what I found. This is not how it should be.
Also, which platform is this running on ? I know it’s not from a Synology unit.
