PlexMediaServer 1.18.3.2111 Update Failure on Synology DS415+ : Package just spins

Server Version#:1.18.3.2111 (trying to update to this)
Player Version#: NA

I downloaded and tried to install the PMS download package to update from (1.18.2.2058) as I normally do and it just sits and says “Updating” with those little squares ‘spining’. It normally takes less than a minute to update. It has been 15 minutes and it is just spinning in the package centre.

Opening up Plex just shows little exclamation marks beside all my media.

Lots of CPU and RAM room left. HDD are not full. Suggestions?

What do I do?

Update: PMS is still not running but it finally said ‘Failed’ and let me close the update window. In package centre it just says “Updating” instead of installed or running. I still have no access to any of my media.

Install this package: https://github.com/ukdtom/PMSLibShare/releases

It was written by one of the Ninjas specifically for QNAP.
After installing, you’ll have a new shared folder in File Station.

In that shared folder, you’ll see “Library”.

Navigate down into it until you see Logs.
Now right-click and make a ZIP file of it.

When it’s done, download to your computer and upload here so I may see what’s happening.

Made for qnap. It is Ok for Synology?

OOps… no My mistake. there is an easier way for Synology

This thread: FAQ 1 to make sure you have access

Then File station -> Plex -> Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server

Now right-click Logs and Compress to Logs.zip

it will do the same as it does on qnap.

when it’s done, download to your computer and upload here please.

Here they are
Logs.zip (5.3 MB)

My wife is gonna kill me. I said I would wait until later to update but she was getting frustrated with some things so I did it anyway.

Pleaes go to Settings - General

turn DEBUG logging ON
Now recreate and recapture and grab the logs again.

it doesn’t use more disk space than with it off but does make it possible for me to diagnose what’s happening.

It is ON by default for that reason.

Also, Please do NOT enable VERBOSE logging. It goes just as far in the oher direction.

Done. Hmm I have no memory of changing that but at some point in the past I must have I guess.

Argh, am I screwed? I can’t try to update because Plex just says updating in greyed out letters in package centre. Been that way ever since it said failed (about 45 min now)

I have an idea.

Rather than installing from Plex, take the version from Synology’s Package Center.

Uninstall the package you have now (your library is safe).
Download and install the version from them. It’s older but that’s what I want.

Give it about 2 minutes after installation to make the changes needed.

What I think has happened is:

  1. You were running 0.9.15.6 (according to your log files)
Mar 01, 2016 03:12:26 [0xf2d11b70] INFO - Plex Media Server v0.9.15.6.1714-7be11e1 - synology DiskStation i686 - build: linux-synology-i686 synology

  1. The Atom C2538 is a 64-bit CPU, not a 32 bit (which is what was installed but understandable as it predated the 64 bit version.

  2. If you install now from Synology, you’ll get the 64 bit version.

No… You’re OK so far.

I know what it’s doing. Give it time. That Atom isn’t the fastest in the toolbox (I have one too).

How do I uninstall? I usually do that from the package centre. Do I delete a folder in Plex share?

Interesting. The log is pretty old. Back in 2016 that may have been the last time logging was on perhaps? I had a DS211 (32 bit). I have been on the DS415+ (64 bit) for some time.

The most recent version I was just on was PlexMediaServer-1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892-x86_64.spk

Just uninstall the package from package center.
The installer doesn’t delete the contents of the Plex share.

When you install the package, it will go look for the share and use it just as it is.

So should I leave it go overnight or install the download file I just got from synology? I ask because of what it says; “Installing” in that image.

I don’t want to mess it up and make it angry. :smirk:

Why not make it angry? I do ! LOL (i’m also the developer hahahaha)

Stop the installation. If it fusses, restart the whole unit. You won’t hurt it.

How do I stop it? Package centre has no option for that, or uninstall for that matter, as it seems to be busy and the dropdown is greyed out.

Is there a service or process perhaps?

There is but let DSM handle it.

Just tell DSM to restart
It will do the rest

Rebooting now. It complained that there may be data loss or system instability (or something like that) as:

  • (un)installing was running
  • and hyperbackup (just late enough my backup started I guess) ah well.

Update: rebooted and Plex server app in package centre says “Run” is now an option.

Should I uninstall and install manually again pr try running now that logging is enabled

Yes Uninstall.
Install the version from the Synology Package Center

It will look like this when you search for it.

Sorry I was saying downloaded from Synology but I meant Plex. I didn’t know Plex has a site I can add to “Package sources”

Is there an address I can paste and put in there?

Actually, I do want you to download from Synology.

It’s an older version which I know will work.

It’s a huge step forward for you but a known good step.

I’m trying to avoid the need to wipe out all the metadata you have and start over.

avoiding losing metadata is a good thing. How do I download from Synology?

Normally I get the orange warning of a new version in web and click the download link. Is there a different way I should do it?
