You’re mixing PVE and OMV and docker. – OUCH That’s overly complex.
First, Proxmox has Linux Containers built in.
– No need for ProxMox VMs with another kernel in each VM
– No need for Docker because LXC is a far better container. You run the native Plex app in the LXC (I use LXC here for all my testing on Ubuntu machines)
Proxmox requires you manually modify (blacklist) certain drivers in order for Plex to run correctly. This is easily ‘broken’ when doing upgrades. I had done it once and the next upgrade broke all my manual work so I gave up
If you can work, for now (thank you for trying), with tone mapping turned off, it won’t be a long wait. We almost have the upgrades/updates for OpenCL at a forum-preview state.
Sorry, think I didn’t make myself completley clear. I’m only running OMV & Docker. No Proxmox virtulisation here.
It’s just that there is the option to boot with another kernel within OMV, with some being Proxmox kernel. It’s not an actual implementation of the Proxmox virtulisation suite - it simply is that you can use the Proxmox Linux kernel to boot.
Anyway, I’m now back to booting the 6x kernel.
Thank you - I shall wait. No major rush for me as I have switched off HDR tonemapping conversion. So this is fine for now.
Thanks very much for your input and help for this issue.
Ended up on 23.04 as 22.04’s kernel didn’t support raptor lake but 6.2.0-39-generic x86_64 does.
Managed to migrate my data successfully after fixing permissions.
As to why I have such a complicated setup, it’s because I only have room for a single server in my condo and I went from Windows → unRaid → Proxmox organically as my needs expanded.
Plus I’m considering moving into devops in the future.
Just tried on my Gemini Lake J5005 with 1.40.7998. Still no joy. 100% CPU for 4K → 1080p with tone mapping conversion turned on. Again, if I switch off tone mapping, 4K → 1080p works fine.
Update: tone mapping on some videos is not working ok, a lot of buffering and cpu at 15% so veeeery weird. But on other with tone mapping works without any issues. Still trying to figure why it is ok one and not on other. Without tone mapping all videos transcode ok.
Hey all, I wanted to chime in. I’m running Unraid 6.12.6 with the Intel drivers installed. My server is running on an Intel Core i5-14500 (AlderLake-S GT1) and I have the latest beta of PMS running (1.40.1.8120).
I must say that I haven’t read the whole thread, so I might have missed some vital info.
Plex is still not using the iGPU for transcoding when tonemapping is required. I’m not sure if that is still in the works, if so I’ll gladly wait for that to be fixed.
Transcode 4K HDR to 1080p without tonemapping: Works
Transcode 4K HDR to 1080p with tonemapping (HW): Not working (uses CPU)
Transcode 4K SDR to 1080p no tonemapping of SDR: Works
If I can provide any logs that might help please let me know.
Edit: Upgraded to Unraid 6.12.8 today but that doesn’t make a difference.
I have an intel core i5-1240P. Latest Plex ( 1.40.0.7998) running in a LXC (Ubuntu 22.04) container running on the latest version of Proxmox 8.1.4. I can also confirm the same results as VlarpNL ^^.

unrelated to tone mapping issues, I may have had an issue with PMS 1.40.3.
When using the latest plex media server for docker (plexinc/pms-docker:1.40.3.8555-fef15d30c) I started having intermittent playback errors during media playback. the error seems to be related to the decoder, and happens randomly (normally at least once per hour).
After having rolled back to an older version (plexinc/pms-docker:1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e) playback seems to be fine as there have been 0 errors after 4 hours of playback.
If it matters, host OS is Ubuntu Server LTS 22.04, and configuration is using a ramdisk for transcoding. RAM is ECC-capable, and OS reports ECC as being used. No PMS log is available that shows the error.
Might I impose a bit and ask you to go back to 1.40.3.8555 just long enough to capture us a fresh set of DEBUG logs ? (enable DEBUG logging and SAVE the change. “Info/error” logging won’t be sufficient for this.
We are tracking some errors with tonemapping but if yours aren’t tonemapping related, it might be a very important clue.
Can you tell me which CPU you’re using and if iGPU or external GPU
AMD Ryzen 3600, CPU transcoding. No GPU
Where does the log[s] get saved? I May need to mount the log dir to get access from the host OS.
I can try to get logs this week.
