PMS is re-adding my entire library...why?

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#: N/A

I’m experiencing an issue similar to " Plex re-adds my entire music library regularly"; I’m also running PMS on a Mac Mini and connected over gigabit to a Synology NAS using SMB shares. But for me it’s all my libraries. All my movies, TV shows, movies, everything is being re-added, constantly.

This means PMS is regenerating thumbnails, re-detecting TV show intros, re-analyzing media, resetting my watched status, and completely destroying the hours of works I’ve put into organizing movie/tv collections…just no good at all!

That’s it. I’ve no idea where to start for troubleshooting. If this continues then I can’t feasibly keep using PMS, given the intense processing associated with constantly re-adding my entire library.

How do you have the following setting configured?
Settings (Server Name) -> Library -> Empty trash automatically after every scan

If enabled and a library scan is performed while your library files are unavailable for any reason, Plex Media Server will remove the items from your library. A subsequent scan when the media is available again will treat it as newly-added.

If it’s currently enabled, try disabling it to see if that helps. When disabled and media becomes unavailable, Plex will let you know by placing a trashcan icon over its poster.

I had it enabled. It is now disabled. I’ll try to update here once it’s clear whether the undesired behavior has stopped, and before the topic auto-closes.

I appreciate the advice.

You know how there’s a little pop-up box when you try to delete your content from the server, or when you split a duplicate? It asks if you’re sure you want to do that?

Maybe they should add a few of those pop-ups to some library settings that explain things like this

As twilsonco said, it’s deleting the hours of work he put into organizing things which is a bit more important that asking me if I really want to split a two part movie

No problem, hopefully that will prevent your updates from being lost. But this fix is for a fairly specific problem: temporary loss access to the media files. That can happen with network attached storage, so it’s not unlikely.

But there are other potential causes for the behavior you’re seeing. For example, if the media is never matched properly to begin with a subsequent scan may undo changes you’ve made to any unmatched items. There’s a filter you can set in your libraries to see if you have unmatched items:

If you do have any, you’ll want to correct the cause of that as well.

Totally. Some people would lose their mind over their lost watch history too.

I would use afp. I find it is much more stable on MacOS than SMB

Interesting. Word around the net sort of agrees, but AFP was deprecated years ago. It seems SMB3 is faster than AFP.

I have had issues with SMB connections to my Synology, but I only switched from AFP due to similar problems. I’ll keep this in mind if problems continue.

They finally took AFP sharing out of Big Sur, though the client is still there.

I used to prefer AFP/Netatalk. It wasn’t always as fast as SMB3, but it always worked.

In the last year - along with Big Sur & updates to TrueNAS and Samba, I find that SMB3 is consistent and reliable.

I think that the specific NAS/Server OS makes a big difference in how well either protocol works.

Ah. My machine is still on high sierra. Had no reason to upgrade it.

My Mac server is forever on Catalina, so I guess I can switch to afp without fear of it disappearing since I’ll never upgrade!
