PMS on Synology NAS?

Hey all, I’ve got a few questions about running PMS on my Synology NAS.

My NAS is a RS4017xs+ with 64GB RAM and a 10GBe ethernet. I use it mainly for serving up media in the house. Currently, I’ve got a hi-end Mac Mini (with 10gbe ethernet) acting as my PMS and a Nvidia Shield acting as my PMS.

I was thinking that removing the Mac mini from the mix might simplify things and speed things up a bit.

I’ve got just under 4000 HD films, just over 600 4K films, nearly 600 TV shows with many seasons for each and other random videos

I’m wondering a few things: If I remove the Mini from the mix:

  1. Can the NAS (Intel Xeon D-1541 8 core proc & 64GB RAM) handle the work load – mostly 4K content with uncompressed HD audio?

  2. Can the NAS handle multiple streams, transcoding on the fly and syncing/downloading all at once?

  3. Will this extra load create more wear and tear on the NAS and RAID setup?

Appreciate any comments from anyone with experience on the subject.

Thanks for the insight. Doesn’t sound like its a solid option for running PMS.

Maybe I’ll look into running PMS/PMP on the mini withHDMI out from there?

… and yeah, I already moved over to the new “downloads”, was just muscle memory

The mini in question is an Intel 3.2GHz 6-core i7 with 64GB RAM and an Intel UHD Graphics 630 (also with 10Gbe ethernet)

Good point on the backup!

Yup, Was pretty confusing at first when moving from “sync”. Had a few hiccups but looks to be all good now.

Roger that!

I wasn’t sure if the mini could handle both the server and the player – glad to hear it will.

Doesn’t the latest PMP support TV interface?

Ah, for some reason I thought they were continuing development on the PMP TV layout.

Prolly not a good option to go that route then. Pretty disappointing. The Shield I’m using as a player now has its ups and downs – it’s definitely not a reliable device. When it works, its great but I have constant issues with it.

Guess I’ll stick with the Shield until something better comes along…

Thanks!

Ah, maybe I read it incorrectly. I thought you implied the feature was being removed. Maybe you just meant the switch was being removed?
