"Something went wrong" constantly as I try to access a title

My PMS runs on ubuntu 16.04 (although I am not super knowledgeable on linux, working on that)
My players run on Android TV, nVidia Shield Pro, or Android proper

My plex server is at home but my media is in cloud storage on gsuite. I use Plexguide, or PGBlitz, to access the media as a go-between.

My issue is when accessing a title in any of the plex players, it hangs for awhile before giving me the error that “something went wrong” and I have to click retry 2-5 times before it works. Sometimes I’m not able to ever access the title no matter how many times I click retry so I have to reboot the server and most of the time that helps, and again after having to click retry 2-5 times I’m able to get a title to load and play. I have tried to look at the console as this happens and look up anything that resembles an error but I haven’t found anything yet, and this is why I come for help.

I have run optimize database many times, this does not help. I am on the verge of simply removing the database and letting it scan the library again, although this would be an all-day job and I have collections that I do not want to lose, so I don’t want to do this if I don’t have to. I worry that the database is corrupt or the HDD is dying on the machine since reboots have helped it along. I have run the SQLite commands to check the database and those have said “ok”. I also tried to run the automatic fix SQLite command but that didn’t seem to do anything.

“Something went wrong” occurs in all my libraries, although my main movie library is the one I use the most and this occurs most frequently. This library is quite large.

Hi Bizort,

If you put content directly on your Ubuntu server does it stream properly? I don’t recommend streaming your content from outside sources. I used to in the past which I stored content from the cloud and its not that great. Plex had that option in the past and they pulled the plug. Also that is your internet speed and the processor on that Ubuntu Server and the drives you are running. You need some little bit of power to able to stream some content…

While it’s technically an outside source, it is my media that I have stored and only I can access. I just have it in the cloud rather than local. I’m just clarifying that I’m not doing anything illegal or anything like that. I just need a lot of storage so I opted for google suite and I wanted to be able to mount the data as a drive so that Plex could access it so I opted for pgblitz aka plexguide.

I’m on a fiber connection that normally gets about 500mb/sec so the speed is not a problem. Once it gets going streaming it hardly ever stutters. It’s just a matter of getting Plex to display the movie information without the above errors. Maybe there’s a timeout it’s hitting somewhere.

Processor shouldn’t be a problem. It’s running on an i7 with either 16 or 32gb of ram, I forget which, running on a WD 2tb hdd.

edit: I’ll also add that this “something went wrong” problem began to occur a few weeks ago, possibly after a software upgrade, and that while pulling up movie information was always a tad slow, as you’d expect when your data isn’t local, it didn’t give me this problem prior to the last couple of weeks. It may have happened once in awhile but definitely not to this extent, and I’ve had this setup for about two years now

I only turned debug on just now so this zip does not have debug information, or at least I don’t think it does. I’ll keep debug turned on and upload a new zip tomorrow to capture more information for when this occurs again, if that’s what you recommend

Having this problem again as we speak. Uploading new set of logs to bump the thread. This is driving me absolutely nuts.

On my player I have cleared the cache and data, uninstalled all updates on my nvidia shield 2017 so it’s back to the plex factory player, and it’s telling me it loses the connection to the server each time I try to pull up the movie, which was playing just fine until about 45 mins into it it just stopped playing and I cannot connect to even pull up the title information now.

the server and about half of my machines are static IPs, the others are dhcp. i’ll set them all as static and see how i go with that, thanks

edit: I’ll replace the ethernet cable as well, to be safe

i found that pihole, which was running elsewhere, was acting as a second dhcp server so i’ve disabled that and i haven’t seen as much of that crazy network activity, which has helped. i still get one or two of the “something went wrong” messages but never more than two at this stage and the title will load. i’d still like to get to the bottom of these ‘something went wrong’ messages, as this is relatively new. i’ll let this go a couple more days and post logs again, if someone can continue helping me

had another issue that’s been happening lately in which my movie stops playing and plex forgets that i’ve even played a movie, forgets my progress, as though nothing ever happened, and the player just sits there with a circle spinning in the middle of the screen

i’ve attached the logs but this is the error i saw on the console coming up over and over:

did a google search on this in quotes and didn’t find anything

not sure if this is causing my overall problem but it’s definitely one of the problems i’ve been having

Thank you for the logs.

Your network is going nuts.

It appears as if your DHCP server is misconfigured (or you have multiple conflicting servers)

If the machine has a static IP, check the cabling.
If it’s WiFi, URGE you to connect it via wire.

It’s causing PMS to go into a network adapter reset storm.

not sure where that’s coming from. my dhcp server is static and wired. i’ll swap the cable out on it.

i ran wireshark and ran ipconfig /release and renew and it’s only my router offering dhcp so there isn’t a rogue dhcp server. very odd

i’ve swapped dhcp responsibilities to another machine (from router to my raspberry pi) and i’ll see how that goes. thanks again

hi all,

i believe i’ve solved the network issue now. i have wireless mac address filtering on and i had a slight typo in the mac address for the player that was the biggest culprit in this scandal. i fixed that and i haven’t seen those dhcp errors come up in my own log monitoring so that’s one problem down (i think/hope). why was the device working at all if the mac address had a typo in it? I don’t know! but i’ll move on from that

secondly, i am still getting ‘something went wrong’ when bringing a title up, although not nearly as often and most of the time it is not preventing me from playing a title now. this morning, though, i am getting the same original problems

i have attached the logs. the player i always have this issue with is 192.168.1.37 (nvidia shield tv pro 2017). i could see the GET requests in the live logs, and the circle was spinning on the tv for 5 or so minutes but nothing played; it just sat there, circle spinning. i moved to another player (android phone, 192.168.1.120) and this player continuously gave me the “something went wrong” box over and over without even bringing up title details. this is the original problem i posted about. These occurred around 08:48 today, local time. a restart of the player (app restart or full reboot) and a restart of the wifi adapter on the player do not fix the issue.

I can see in your logs where the network is much more stable.

I can also see the playback failures.

It’s trying to select an English subtitle for a Foreign Language film and then the transcoder is completely failing to launch.

Do you have an older DEB file of PMS handy?

I ask because I wonder if your 16.04.7, which was officially EOL by Canonical on

I’m not certain what you are asking for in terms of the DEB file. You would like me to downgrade the PMS software? This would make sense to me. These issues popped up maybe 2-3 months ago but before that I didn’t have any playback issues

So you believe it is an OS limitation? I am limited to v16.04 by my storage solution but I think I can upgrade to 18.04 with little issue. Would this sufficiently solve the issue to your knowledge?

Maybe we can do a few changes to improve your configuration in several ways.

  1. Do you know how many MB are used in /var/lib/plexmediaserver ?
    sudo du -ms /var/lib/plexmediaserver

  2. Do you have a /home partition or another physically mounted drive we could use?
    df

My thinking -

  1. Move PMS off the root partition
  2. Give you room to upgrade the OS distro to more current and have breathing room.

you have 500 GB of that 2TB drive available.

If you’re not using the chapter indexing thumbnails / don’t want them, a lot of space can be cleared (you get one image file per 5 minutes for skipping to chapters if there are none in the file else you get one for each defined chapter in a movie / episode)

We could backup the server to the NAS, make the upgrade, pull it back. Choice is yours.
