Multiple problems with my plex server that I assume are related

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7192
Player Version#: I’ve only used the web app, not sure what this means.

I’ve installed plex media server on lubuntu and when doing sudo systemctl status plexmediaserver.service it says it is active.

When I go to localhost:32400/web in my browser it says that my server is unclaimed. However, when I click claim server it loads for a while then turns grey again. It also says an update is available, but I believe I have the latest version. Finally, When I click on media through the web app I get the message, “Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.”

I’m not very experienced with linux or servers so hopefully its something trivial. Thank you for reading.

I forgot to add this to my post, but logging in on my PC works although claiming the server does what I stated above. On the other hand, logging in on the PC hosting the server does not work, saying instead “We are unable to connect to plex.tv at this time.” Trying to claim the server on the PC hosting the server does nothing, it doesn’t even show a loading icon.

From your description (inactive), it sounds like PMS isn’t running through systemd.
you MIGHT have installed the SNAP package by accident.

Linux has two main forms for Plex:

  1. Direct native package which is installed with sudo dpkg -i filename.deb
  2. SNAP package which gets installed when using the App Store GUI.

Type: sudo snap list and see if that’s where your PMS got installed.

Now you have a choice:

  1. Remove & purge the snap; switching to the native app with dpkg (which will give you more features like HW transcoding).
  2. Debug the SNAP package.

How would you like to proceed.

To be honest, I’d prefer whichever one you think would be easier for a new linux user to follow. Thank you so much for your quick response!

Although, I’m not sure that it is installed through SNAP. When I type sudo snap list I see:

bare
core20
firefox
gnome-3-38-2004
gtk-common-themes
snapd

And that’s it.

let’s give it another shot then…

sudo systemctl start plexmediaserver

Wait about a minute

ps -ef | grep -i plex

You should see several processes.

If you see none:

sudo bash
cd "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server"
tar cfz /tmp/PlexLogs.tar.gz ./Logs

Now upload that logs GZ file here to the forum.

ps -ef | grep -i plex gave me

plex 988 1 0 13:19 ? 00:00:15 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server
plex 1035 988 0 13:20 ? 00:00:16 Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-7aa441827/Framework.bundle/Contents/Resources/Versions/2/Python/bootstrap.py --server-version 1.32.3.7192-7aa441827 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-7aa441827/System.bundle
plex 1124 988 0 13:20 ? 00:00:10 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Tuner Service /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Tuner/Private /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Tuner/Shared 1.32.3.7192-7aa441827 32600
toast 41889 41775 0 14:30 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto -i plex

so it is running and not inactive as first observed.

Can you do the following please ?

  1. Open a Private Browsing window
  2. Open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
  3. Sign into your server (it doesn’t know you since you’re private browsing)
  4. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting (lower left corner of Plex/web)
  5. Download Logs
  6. It will give you a ZIP file.
  7. Please attach that ZIP file here.

Trying to sign in on my PC running the server results in “Plex is not reachable. We are unable to connect to plex.tv at this time.” Should I try those steps from another PC?

What’s wrong with the computer? it’s not connected to the internet?

The computer is connected and connects to other websites fine. It just wont let me log in to Plex. To clarify, it is the Plex website giving me that error message, not Firefox.

On your LAN, does your computer use IPv4 or IPv6 or both ?

When you lookup your WAN IP, what do you see? v4 or v6 or both ?

I’m sorry, how do I look up my WAN IP. (I configured the server on IPv4, but I don’t know if that’s the one I was supposed to use.)

IPv4 is correct.

I’m asking about IPv4/v6 because Plex.tv is only seeing a IPv6 address.

It gets fussy and doesn’t really work well with IPv6-only environments,

Can you please make a tar.gz of your “Logs” directory (from under /var/lib/plexmediaserver) and attach it here ?

How do I make a tar.gz? Sorry, I’m not very experienced with all of this.

I’m sorry?

This is basic Linux admin level command line stuff. Stuff you need to know when running a Linux machine.

sudo tar cfz /tmp/PlexLogs.tar.gz "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs"

When that finishes, the Logs.tar.gz will be in /tmp.
Upload (attach) it to your next reply

PlexLogs.tar.gz (1.2 MB)

From your logs, I find multiple commanded shutdowns

The biggest issue I find is a runaway network adapter. it’s constantly being reset.
Is the server getting its address via DHCP or is it static?
If DHCP – Check the lease time on the DHCP server. There’s an error there. Lease time should be at least 86400 seconds (1 day)

You had one crash which occurred right after the adapter reset. It’s possible PMS got caught in a weird state and couldn’t deal with it.

Notice the IP address. It’s the IP address an ethernet port gets when not configured / plugged in.

Is there a loose / bad cable ?

That is likely because I’m running on WiFi for now with plans to switch to Ethernet at some point, so while troubleshooting I plugged it into Ethernet to see if it would fix any of my issues which it didn’t. Anyways, no I set the connection to be static.
