Hi there, Plex is the most stunning media server I ever got to know. Especially because of this I am really annoyed of this database false positive I have:
I am hosting - beside many others - Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) and the spin-off named Caprica in my library. But the PMS is assigning all episodes of BSG to belong to Caprica and none to BSG. This is my file structure:
So can somebody give me advice how to assign the correct episode to the correct file? Would naming like “BSG S01E01 {tt0519761}.mkv” help? → from "Battlestar Galactica" 33 (TV Episode 2004) - IMDb
There are a few issues with your folder organization and file naming which could cause the scanner to mis-identify things:
Assuming that your TV library is pointing to your “Series” folder, you need to remove the extra directory level beneath it; Battlestar Galactica should be under Series\Battlestar Galactica (2003) directly and Caprica should be under Series\Caprica. Placing both under the same Series\Battlestar Galactica folder is a problem.
You should place your files into appropriate Season XX folders under the main show folder. All specials should be in a folder named Season 00 or Specials.
Your Caprica file names should be in the form Caprica - SxxEyy - Episode Title (the episode title is optional). The only mandatory part of the file name (other than the file extension) is the SxxEyy.
An example would be:
cdrewing/Videos/Series/ <--- Library points here
Battlestar Galactica (2003)/
Season 00/
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S00E22 - The Plan.mkv
...
Season 01/
Battlestar Galactica (2003) - S01E01 - 33.mkv
...
Caprica/
Season 01/
Caprica - S01E01 - Pilot.avi
...
There’s more detail in the Plex TV naming guidelines:
There are tools, such as Filebot, which can help you organize and name your media in a semi-automated manner.
Ah, thank you for clearing this! So to summarize how the agent is working: it’s all about filenames and path names, right? I thought PMS would scan video files and create video fingerprints, comparing with online databases… rocket science stuff (like Musicbrainz Picard). But if it’s “just” naming I am fine
