PMS scanner question

Hello to all, hope I am posting in the right section.

 

PMS is running on a mac, data is on a NAS.

98 TV Shows

 

It seems like the scrapping of shows is not working properly for a lake of better words.

My understanding is if the data/time stamp has not changed it should be skipping, so scrapping should be fast.

What does "* Taking directory 'Game of Thrones/Season 03' (4619) out of the map (9 left)\" out of the map mean? and 9 left?

then a little later it states "Skipping over directory 'Game of Thrones/Season 03', as nothing as changed per the timestamp; removing 10 media items from map.\" so why did it scan a few files previously only to state skipping? but then a few lines after scanning files again? and then lastly again stating "Skipping over directory 'Game of Thrones/Season 03/metadata', as nothing as changed per the timestamp; removing 0 media items from map.\"?

Thanks mmccurdy, i have done deep scans in the past. I hope you agree I can't keep doing deep scans every time I add several episodes to my library. I am at my wits end. Shows disappear, only to come back again after another scan, at time it take several scans. I just don't know what to do any more. I PMed Elan, he stated post in the forums, posts go unanswered or very little help. I tried campfire, but just don't know how to go about getting support. I donated $ in the past, but have not jumped on the plexpass bandwagon. If I paid for a lifetime membership tomorrow would anything change, would I get support and someone to help me get to the root cause of my issues? I am very serious here, is that what it will take? The logs seem too have tons of info, yet no one can answer what is going on in mine, if I understood what all the lines mean maybe I would figure something out, but the devs code this output... argh... just let me know what it takes to get support.

If a deep scan finds your items, but a turbo scan does not, then the most likely cause is that your NAS (or the method you are using to mount it) does not properly update directory modification times when new contents are added. Is your NAS an unRAID by chance?

..... or turbo scan had run through the folder while file was being copied over.

For love of all that is holy, please allow us to run Deep Scan by default. Make it hidden / advanced option , make it terminal preference toggle but do it already.

Yes my NAS is unRAID latest RC16c with AFP enabled. PMS is running on a Mac Mountain Lion with AFP mounts to the unRAID NAS. Is there something you know about this?

I had exactly this behavior with unRAID (and particular unRAID and AFP).  The implementation is dubious, and I could never make it work reliably after months of trying.  I got very little sympathy from the unRAID dev or user community.

You can try using SMB instead of AFP with unRAID, which *should* help with things mysteriously disappearing and reappearing.  You may also want to turn off "empty trash on scan" so at least they don't get removed from the library completely to show up again as new.  It's a known issue that directory mtimes are not updated on unRAID user shares when their contents change.  There is also much frustration over this topic over on the unRAID forums.

Unfortunately, there's not much Plex can do if the filesystem that it has to work with is not stable.  In the long run, if those two suggestions don't work, I'd really suggest looking for another NAS solution.

The thing with unRAID is you have various things that are modifying date/time stamps, if you have a cache drive you set a D/T upon bringing the files down to the cache drive, via rsync it moves the folders/files to the protected array, this process modifies the D/T as well, the there is the file system, permissions and network protocols (like AFP). Its been a very slow process getting fixes in... If you know what the problem is and can reproduce it and explain it pretty well, then it gets fixed. Unfortunately the Dev wont update AFP until the next release, I have exhausted the pleading. I don't think AFP is the only problem though there. The thing is having a mega media NAS which spin-down drives when not in use is great.

Switching to SMB is mostly transparent.  There's a slight performance hit vs. AFP, but pretty much every filesystem operation (including streaming stuff from PMS) should work the same.

The main thing you're looking for is that the directory modification time ("mtime") gets updated when a new thing is added.  The turbo scan checks these timestamps to decide if it needs to descend into a directory to look for new stuff, so if it's not properly updated, the scanner will ignore it.  As I said, there are some threads over on the unRAID forum that complain about this issue specifically as it relates to the Plex scanner, and at least as of a few months ago it had not been addressed.

I also think it's probably doubtful that AFP will get much attention over there, especially since Apple is now even retiring it in favor of SMB2.
