PMS was running great, now won't stay on for more than a few seconds

Server Version#: Plex Media Server v1.23.2.4656
NAS Version#: Synology DS920+ x86_64 - build: linux-x86_64
Linux version#: DSM 6.2.4.25556-0
Player Version#: 4.57.4

This Plex Server has been running flawlessly for about a year on this Synology DS920+

A few days ago it shut down and just will not stay running. I start it and it takes about 30 seconds to initialize and then immediately shuts down again.

I had not recently updated the Synology DSM version or the Plex Server. I did install the Synology Photo Station app on the NAS and the corresponding client app on my Windows 10 PC about a week ago. I have not made any other configuration or OS changes recently.

The first thing I tried was to update the PMS version, which was only a month or so old. That did not improve the situation.

I see a lot of somewhat interesting things in the logs, but I don’t know this app well enough to determine if these are “normal” errors or something needing to be fixed.

Thanks in advance for any tips or guidance,
–Adam B.

Mine also keeps shutting down, I keep having to restart it. Just updated it a few hours ago to version, PlexMediaServer-1.23.3.4706-f48049cad-x86_64_DSM6, and it again shut down.

@AdamQB

I need you to turn the DEBUG logging back on so we can see what it’s trying to do when it fails.

I understand you wanted to turn it off but now we need it on and it won’t stay on long enough to let us do it via the UI.

Therefore,

  1. If you don’t have the Synology Text Editor app installed, please do so (Package Center - Search for “Text Editor”)

Next:

  1. Open the Plex share in Filestation
  2. Navigate down into Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server
  3. Right-Click “Preferences.xml”
  4. Navigate down to the bottom line,
  5. Right before the closing />, please type: logDebug="1"
  6. It should look like this when done.
    Some_Pref="Value" logDebug="1" />
  7. Save the file
  8. Exit the editor
  9. Start PMS.
  10. Now when it fails, we’ll have a better idea what’s happening.

Let’s get the logs.

  1. From the “Plex Media Server” folder,
  2. Right-click Logs and then Compress to Logs.zip
  3. Download that ZIP
  4. Attach it here.
  5. I will read through it.

Thanks, Chuck! I have followed the steps and it did add a lot of DEBUG statements. I had tried to enable this in the web UI, but it doesn’t connect long enough to select and save.

@AdamQB

Thank you for the logs.

It looks like it’s dying when either the playback starts or DVR wakes up.

My best guess, would be DVR given others have had DVR failures like this.

That said, if you are trying to play on an android device , and playing with subtitles, that’s the other problem fixed in the current PexPass package.

Would you consider upgrading to it and retesting?

Thanks again, @ChuckPa

I’m willing to make any changes if we can get it working. I haven’t been playing content on Android. I manage the library with a Windows machine and all playback is on Roku devices.

I do think that this issue started happening while I was setting the DVR to record the Jazz/Clippers series.

I see a new version on the Plex.tv site for my NAS,-- 1.23.3.4706-f48049cad is this the right one?

Yes, That’s the right one.
