Synology plex server stops

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571
Player Version#:

plex pass holder

using plex server in synology, when the app is open will open google chrome (on imac running catalina 10.15.3) site with plex, all the movies in my server loads up fine but within 2 minutes or less server is unavailable with exclamation mark in red. when i check the plex server in synology it is stopped, i restart, then works for a minute or two and stops again. also opened plex server from within synology and stops service the same way.

plex server is updated to 1.18.9.2571 as of 3 weeks ago it was working perfect the this happened suddenly

frustrating to say the least…

any ideas? i really don’t even know where to start.

Pull log files and attach to thread.

  1. Set Plex for debug logs, not verbose. Settings → General → Show Advanced.

  2. Re-create the problem.

  3. Pull logs and attach to post.

Given Plex is unavailable, may need to manually zip the log directory.

See Plex FAQ #1 for instructions.

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-28_15-20-50.zip (2.1 MB)

This does not look good.

  1. You turned off DEBUG logging. I only see “ERROR” statements. I have no way of tracking what PMS is trying to do.
  2. PMS can’t even see what its doing. This implies DSM is highly compromised. Notice the pathname. This is an infinite loop. Either the file system itself is damaged or DSM is damaged (the kernel’s library files).

More information is needed. What’s the last known bad thing to happen to it / Last change made to it?

What happens after a full DSM power off, wait 30 seconds, Power-on of the NAS?

thx for the help,
last bad thing is only plex stopping service, i just turned off for 2 min and repowered all seems normal system health is good
i do have debug logging turned on but when system stops i cannot get log unless i restart plex in dsm the only have a minute or two to download zip file, i will try again

this time i figured out log without logging back in

Logs.zip (2.2 MB)

You can pull the logs without Plex running.

You can manually zip the log file directory using File Station.

See FAQ #1 linked in my earlier post. It has necessary directions.

Edit: Here’s a pic: Right click on Log directory. Choose Compress.

i think this is it…

/Volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

Logs.zip (2.2 MB)

This is still bad. PMS cannot talk to the kernel.
The kernel is telling Plex of an infinite loop of self-referential symbolic links.

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Uninstall plex.
  3. Restart DSM
  4. Reinstall Package
  1. stopped plex
  2. uninstalled plex server
  3. restarted dsm
  4. re-installed plex server
  5. opened plex and with a minute server unavailable again

One last view of the updated logs please?

I fear they will be unchanged. If this is true then we have a much bigger problem.

Is this the native PMS on DSM or is there something special about it?

Logs (1).zip (2.1 MB)

nothing special about is, i just open on from dsm opens up a google chrome tab and shows everything then within a minute server unavailable

The core SSL certificates in DSM are corrupt.

This leaves no choice but to reinstall DSM (which can be done without losing your NAS data).

  1. You will need the Synology Assistant (you used to setup the NAS)

  2. This Procedure https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General_Setup/How_to_reset_my_Synology_NAS

  3. Particular to this case is: item 3 near the bottom of the page.

3. Mode 2: Reset Synology NAS and re-install the operating system DSM

thank you very much for your help, i really appreciate it, i will attack this tomorrow and post the results. so glad to be one step closer to resolve

We are here.

If you really need help, you can always reach out to Synology for this level of problem.
