Poll Please Voice Your Opinion On The New Plex App For Xbox One And Comment To Keep It Active

If it’s a one off update then we have been screwed. If it’s the first or many regular updates then I am ok with the bugs, for now. It would be nice for the Devs to commit to fixing issues and then providing ongoing support for this app

The developers are committed to fixing this app. The reason this update had to happen was they were no longer able to submit fixes for the old app. Because it was on the legacy framework it was locked into place with no new features from Plex or Microsoft, and no more bug fixes. Because of that the developers had to code a new app on the UWP framework which allows for a lot better abilities to support the new app.

This update has constant connection and play issues! Its awful. It is bland and empty like a quick half finished wordpress blog or something! the old app was great, now this, agh…

Mistakes were made, we appreciate your attempt at an upgrade but it really just needs to be reversed and we can start again. Please make the old UI available.

Unfortunately, the only way to go is forward. The old app cannot be submitted to Microsoft anymore because it was written on the legacy framework. The new app was coded to use UWP and shares no UI elements of the old app. This means there is no way to reverse the app back to the old app.

The best course of action is to voice what is actually not working for you in the new app so the UX team can look at improving it.

So my buddy is sharing his photos and videos off his Plex server and I don’t have any photos and video so when I moved across from movies to tv and then photos/videos… all is garbage is now viewable by my children! And catch this… I can’t unselect his photos and videos. Not cool.

If you select subtitles Xbox app will transcode the movie instead of direct playing it.

Only if the subtitles are video based. The new app supports sending text subtitle to the player directly now. To force the video to transcode with any subtitle selection you need to change the subtitle option from auto to always burn.

I don’t want to have it transcoded in local network at all.

I was only explaining that your statement that the xbox one will transcode video by selecting subtitles is only true if you change the subtitle to always burn. Otherwise, by default the new app will only transcode subtitles if they are image based.

I have tested automatic and only image formats and I’m ending up always with xbox transcoding.

What do your logs say?

It is fairly evident that not burning subtitles works for some users. Because the server and Xbox are losing the subtitle stream mid playback, which is why users are reporting that subtitles stop playing at 5-10 minutes in. So if you’re unable to direct stream a text based subtitle it would need to be investigated what the cause is.

It would be nice to be able to access my library, but I can’t because my server can only run v0.9.16.4, and this app won’t access it anymore.

Seriously thanks for nothing.

Then ask your friend to un-share the libraries you don’t want to see. The admin can pick and choose specific libraries he shares. He can also set content ratings on libraries as well. S for example you could have him only share “G”, “PG”, PG-13" movies and nothing unrated, “R”, etc

OR you can setup HOME, create a new account for your Kids to use that won’t get your friend’s shares. You can then add a PIN to your account so the kids can’t get into it.

Many ways to “fix” the problem but the easiest is to ask your friend to change what is shared with you.

This works great here. When setting the subtitles to automatic most of the videos are played by direct stream now while in the past this was transcoded most of the time (most videos have external srt files)
Too bad I cant use this now as the subs disappear after a few minutes, always burnin does make them usable for now

Not a single file I’ve tried in my library plays anymore, so despite how much I dislike the new layout, I can’t even get used to it because there’s no reason for me to use the app. Back to the chromecast which works perfectly.

Create separate accounts for you kids.

This may seem silly, but I really miss TV theme songs playing when I select a show. That was such an amazing feature of the app and the new one not doing it is a huge bummer. What are the chances of getting that feature in the new app?

features are coming. V2 is a complete rewrite so be patient

you can turn it on from plex settings. it’s turned off by default so you need to turn it on.

You just made my day, thank you very much

The new UI has some good elements to it, I think it makes better use of negative space than it did before but the three biggest things I’ve seen thus far.

  • The library selection UI was a good idea but implemented really poorly. I can see that it’s great for those with multiple servers and sources, certainly better than the dropdown before. However it generates too many clicks and what was once an easy up down navigation to select different movie libraries is now a mess of menus. Like another person commented I had family who has requested I go back, I of course cannot without using the TV app or the like. This stuff needs to be piloted or something prior to release because the usability of what was a clean interface has been broken.

  • When you land on a screen, sometimes it’s not clearly obvious where the cursor is and you have to 9/10 times click up so it highlights where you are and then down again to where to want to be. This is most prevalent for TV shows. You click on a series or season and then you are in nowhere land at that point.

  • This version of the app seems to make my Xbox One S work harder. I was watching a TV show with the new UI and my Xbox, which was doing nothing else, started to kick in the fan.

Slightly less concerning was that post upgrade it also wiped out all my watched/unwatched info so yeah that’s a fun bit that my OCD nature will have to deal with.

There needs to be some configuration options to allow for adjustment or if it’s all or nothing like it is now then you should be involving the community before going wide with this stuff. As others mentioned, there are serious usability issues that are identifiable in less than a couple minutes of use.

As a long time IT guy I know as a developer or IT pro/savvy user it can be easy to dismiss or ignore seemingly little things because you are used to it and you can put up with more. Keep in mind a lot of “regular” people use this product and need it to function as dumbed down as possible. You can see how big of an issue this is in that after years of being a Plex subscriber I finally came in to actually post something, usually I just get along just fine without.

I really don’t like the changes. I really don’t understand the loss in functionality on TV shows and discovery in general. Hell, if you are going to change even a simple thing like rewind and fast forward why not just make it an option to do either? First time I have been disappointed in plex. I have faith they will make it better but still sucks having to use plex on my phone so much now because the xbox app changed so drastically. Still love plex though and still use it daily of course. Thank you for such great software.
