Popular tracks seems to be working for me again now. Started working magically on same artists/albums that weren’t working a month ago. Only things that I’m aware of changing is updating PMS to the latest version of past few weeks. Happy days!
I’m curious though - which PMS process goes out and gets the latest popular tracks list? I presume it’s Refresh Metadata on the Artist? Or is it something else?
For me this change constitutes a substantial regression of music functionality in Plex.
Having a global list of best (“popular”) tracks for an artist accessible on a single click was the best added value of Plex music for me over other software.
With Plex I was able to add all the albums of any type I could find from an artist and Plex would organize them and present me with the best tracks to listen to. This functionality is now gone by design.
Please consider bringing back compilation/live albums in the Popular Tracks section.
Here are my reasons:
If the goal was to remove duplicate tracks, wouldn’t biasing the album version over the others achieve the same goal? I mean while keeping the compilation song in the popular tracks list if library doesn’t contain the original album.
Some users like myself prefer compilation albums in for space saving reasons or remastered quality. Therefore when both compilation and albums exist for the same artist most times these cover different time periods and do not overlap. We may have 1-2 albums issued after the compilation came out (eg. ACDC - Power Up).
Now when I go to ACDC artist the only “Popular Tracks” shown are from the 2020 Power Up studio album although I have Thunderstruck and others on a compilation album in the same library. In my opinion this is wrong no matter how you look at it.
Not all tracks on a compilation album may be good. Some can be quite mediocre / poor. Having popular tracks include compilations allowed to quickly find / focus on the good tracks and weed out the others.
Some users like myself may have multiple compilation albums from the same artist eg: Santana, Cher (don’t judge me ) that do not overlap since they may cover different periods in time or maybe music done under different labels.
Without popular tracks feature it’s hard to see what’s where and find the best songs.
I believe compilations deserve the same organizing features like regular albums.
