"Popular tracks" disappeared?

Hi there,

I did a “refresh all metadata” today to get the new sorting (albums, EPs, singles etc). I noticed shortly after that for all my artists of which I only have “best of” compilations, the “popular tracks” disappeared from both Plexamp and the Plex web app. For all artists of which I have studio albums in addition to best of compilations, “popular tracks” are still there.

Anyone else see this?

Thanks.

i think that might be by design, because compilation albums are basically most popular by definition, so it seemed repetitive.

Ok, thanks. Any chance this could be redesigned? I have a few examples in my music library where this feels a little bit off. Please allow me to explain: for some of my artists I have one best of compilation + one “less famous” studio album. In these cases Plexamp will show me the most popular tracks by the artist, BUT ONLY tracks from the studio album is shown. Even though probably all tracks in the best of compilation is more popular than all the tracks from the studio album.

I’d like to see either a toggle to turn them on or off, or edit option on the Popular Tracks. Too many of my Artists look like the below:

HAH! I am not the only one who does the halo thing!

Yes! I’m putting the “Null” numbers on the Reznor/Ross collabs as well haha.

I’m impressed you got 5 different popular tracks!

I believe this is how it should be now, popular tracks should generally show the original album version (which relates to the removal of compilations from popular tracks).

you might need to do a refresh metadata?

Ah, I turned off the ep/live splitter since I like my albums to appear in proper chronological order, not split up. That’s probably why my pop tracks will forever be messy. I’ll try a refresh after the sonic discovery stops running sometime next year lol

To clarify (now that I’m not in bed trying to type on an iPad): popular tracks now exclude compilations and live tracks, so if you have both compilations and original albums, it makes the tracks shown come from the albums instead, which seems better.

For the cases where you have only compilations albums, you essentially have a list of popular tracks in the albums, so showing popular tracks as basically the same tracks in a different order didn’t make a ton of sense to me

Thanks, and agreed! But for those (few) cases where I have one best of compilation album in addition to a few studio albums by the same artist, I just thought it was strange to see the popular tracks does not contain tracks that no doubt would be there if I also had the correct studio album in my library. Imagine “Don’t Fear the Reaper” not being amongst the popular tracks by Blue Öyster Cult (just an example  )

What happens if I use the Mix Builder and add an artist (of which I have one best of and one studio album) to my mix? Will the tracks from the studio album be biased?

A notable exception being The Beatles. Past Masters contains a number of tracks many would consider popular that are not available on the core catalogue of studio albums.

All other uses of popularity doesn’t have any built-in bias.

Totally understood, and a fair point. Unfortunately there’s no real know for us to know that, and the query can’t capture that nuance

I noticed in the past couple of weeks that my Popular Tracks aren’t being updated any more when I add new albums. Could there be a more wide spread issue here? I’d made a few key changes myself about a month ago, so one of them could be to blame. But maybe a few other users could check their own libraries and report back whether they see issues. These steps should work to check:

  1. For an artist that doesn’t exist in your Library already, add a new album
  2. Scan your music library
  3. Refresh metadata for that Artist you just added
  4. Wait a few minutes (I don’t know if it just needs a few minutes, or a schedule task period?)
  5. Search Plex for that Artist and check check whether the Popular Tracks have been updated. For me, the popular tracks section is missing for that new artist (even after a week).

As an FYI, about a month ago, I rebuilt my PMS and restored a backup. So there’s some chance that’s to blame? But everything else is working perfectly on it.

So I’m keen to hear if anyone else is also experiencing issue with Popular Tracks after adding new tracks.

I’ve added a few albums and popular tracks are being updated, so not seeing an issue over here.

Any advice on how I can troubleshoot it? Maybe some keywords to search for in logs/console that indicate the popular tracks search service kicking off or failing?

And FYI, I’ve tried toggling the Libraries > Edit Library > Advanced > Popular Tracks off then on again with no difference. And both Scanner and Agent are “Plex Music”. That’s the newer upgraded music library scanner, right?

Thanks for your reply Elan, and I appreciate you’re not experiencing it. But I wonder if anyone else is?

Now that your mention it. I just added an artist named “the kid laroi” and he didn’t get any popular tracks either. Everything seems fine on musicbrainz and he does have popular tracks on lastfm.

@elan could it be specific to some artists? Maybe something wrong with the lastfm API?

It’s possible, I suppose

If it helps, the two artist I just added to my library for the 1st time and where popular tracks failed to appear are: OneRepublic and Natasha Bedingfield (don’t judge me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:). But I’ve also added some older albums to some of my existing artists, and nothing from those albums got added into the existing Popular Tracks list, so it feels like it’s not working for me for either situation.

I also have a few artists in my library where popular tracks failed to appear. One example is Doug Seegers. I only have the album ‘A Story I Got to Tell’ from 2019 by him.

I also have compilations with songs not included in the albums, if songs are repeated, albums should have precedence to avoid duplicates.
