Possibility of Image-based Subtitile Support with New App?

Hi there, I’m curious if there is a possibility that the new Plex App for Xbox One might be updated at some point to support Direct-Play of imaged-based subtitles such as PGS? Is there a specific reason why the support built into the PMP for Windows can’t be brought over to Xbox One? Myself, and a couple of friends primarily use the Xbox App to access my server, and it’s the only thing stopping me from rebuilding my Anime library with multiple audio & subtitle tracks.

Only if Microsoft makes the media player framework able to handle image based subtitles.

Some of the biggest reasons would have to be that the current situation allows Plex to use the media framework provided by Microsoft, this leaves the licensing for codecs and the maintenance of the media player in Microsoft’s hands.

The last reason was a big contributor to why Plex split from PHT and went the path of PMP. When the developers have to spend a majority of their time merging updates between the original source, the fork, and the port it cuts time out of the development of everything else.

Isn’t it supported by the VLC player on Xbox One though?

VLC is a completely different Media Player that has it’s own decoders. On the surface you have VLC Gui and the Plex GUI. In the background Plex makes API calls to the Microsoft Media Player, while VLC uses it’s own Media Player to play things that the Microsoft Player can’t. Even though VLC has access to all the same functions that Plex does, it doesn’t work the other way where Plex can reach out to other app functions for playback. With that being said, I have never looked at the code for VLC so I don’t know if they split their capabilities between the Xbox API’s and their own media player, but since they do have capabilities that the Xbox media player does not it’s safe to assume they have at the very least their own decoding methods for additional support.

In a different sense, it would be like if you had a car (VLC) with air conditioning (VLC’s Media Player) and I had a car (Plex) without (Microsoft Media Player) and we’re both in the same parking lot (Xbox One). We can both use the facilities in the parking lot like the bathroom (Microsoft’s Media Player API), and even though we can both use the bathroom I can’t sit in your car and use the Air Conditioner.
