So Plex does not use the internal video player?

Hi guys, sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn’t find any real answer to my question.

Does the Plex app on the One use the internal video player / codecs? I’m running the Plex server on a Synology NAS which isn’t capable of any transcoding, but I thought the Plex app could play most things directly. However, very few of my files (mp4’s and mkv’s) play, on most, I get (the server is not powerfull enough…". Direct streaming is of course enabled in the app settings.

BUT! Almost all my files play fine using the build in media player over DLNA. So this means that Plex does not use the internal media player? If not, will it anytime soon? :frowning:

I was so excited by the thought of being able to replace my HTPC completely, but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The build in media player works fine over DLNA, but unfortunately lacks subtitle support, etc…

Plex uses the built in media player. In some cases Microsoft has codec support in the DLNA player that is not exposed to third party application developers.

Speaking of subtitles, anytime you try and use subtitles the server must transcode. So if you have subtitles enabled then trying to playback those files that would normally directplay will cause the ‘server is not powerful enough to transcode’ message. The only way we would try and determine what is causing this is to look at your logs and the mediainfo for some of the videos that are not playing correctly for you.

Oh, I just assumed that the subtitles were applied/overlaid locally on the client. I disabled subs on in the server settings (set it to manual instead of ‘always enabled’) and now all my videos play just fine. So that was the issue.

Thanks so much for mentioning this, now I can at least playback everything, even if it’s without subs.

Can I ask, has “direct subtitle support”, been discussed, and is it on the todo-list? Subtitles really seems to be a thing that should be handled without transcoding (I’m assuming everyone want to avoid transcoding as much as possible), but I understand of course that having them encoded by the server makes them work on a lot more devices.

Thanks again jmckee!

Getting subtitles to direct play is something that is always on the radar. It’s just a matter of how difficult it is to work it in with the native player and some other factors.

I unfortunately do not have any insight onto the dev priorities of where this would fall (or even if it is possible).
