pre roll and trailers have been a mess since the beginning
I have been asking for this to be looked into and fixed for a long time.
last time I tested… turning on either pre roll or trailers resulted in very upredictible playback behavior depending on the client… in plex installlations where users had multiple versions of movies stacked so as to use the clients choose version pop up or option menu…
for instance… if I had a movie in full 1080 and a 720 versions that stack under a single thumbnail… with those features turned off… I could select to play either the high bitrate or low bitrate version of the movie… either through a pop up window or in the menu of the client.
with the features turned on… depending on the client… I either would not get the pop up or menu choice to select a version at all … .or plex would ignore the selection and play randomly usually selecting the lower bitrate file…
it was brought to @elan over a year ago… nothing done about it still that I know of…
I really dont use any plex pass features since most are either helplessly broken, dont work well, or ineferre with playback of movies at full bitrate… I have disabled sync (bugs and hangs, slow) , photos (buggy, not inuitive, poor user experience) , pre-roll/ trailers before movies (breaks movie playback), auto quality (breaks full bitrate playback, makes almost all playback worse than if off), bandwith limiting(breaks playback), music (still have a library (premium) but is a poor user experiance, no equilizer, no volume leveling, buggy playlist retreval from itunes libraries… poor itunes library integration period really… and it goes on… plex is barely able to acceptibly play movies at this point…
DVR is being evaluated along with live tv… its not great… the free live TV client for mac/ios from silcon image is a far better interface… it plays direct from the tuner to the device without transcoding through my server first, channel tuning is slick with beautiful UI… far superior to plex Live… DVR is still buggy but making some progress…
I have a 2xl5640 xeon 24 thread system with 48gb memory and plenty of wired and wireless bandwith to my clients… it has had no issues in the past with WORKING version of plex to serve out anything in my libraries… I was a DoD software engineer that specialized in independent validation & verification QA testing and compliance so I know how to run things through the wringer…
