Preferences controlling audio and subtitle stream selection - why not movies?

Because for movies with dubs, this would be nice. And since TV has it, why not?

Plex Documentation → Your Media → Using Subtitles

Are you referring to automatically selecting audio and subtitle tracks?

  • Configure language selections in account settings.
  • Ensure embedded subtitles are tagged correctly (language/forced) and external subtitles have the correct language code (i.e. they do not appear with language = “unknown.”).
  • Note that if you manually select a subtitle, Plex remembers the selection the next time you play the same file.

I believe he is talking about the advanced settings of a tv show ( not individual episodes) where you can set that for the whole show.

The reason it is there is because is to not have to select audio & subtitles for each individual episode (like wanting all of an anime show using Japanese audio and not use their normal default of english audio).

Movies are a singular item where you can just change on the main details page.

This is what I’m talking about, yes.

However it would still be useful for movies because the setting overrides a users language preferences.

Think of it like this, a user could very well have the preferred language set to English. I have a few Asian movies with original language plus English dub. The dub would now be selected.

It would be useful to set such a movie to override to it’s original language.

The setting on the movies details page already does that. If you manually change setting it will stick.

The new TV settings is so you only have to manually change it there once for all episodes of the show.

I might be missing something here you are trying to explain

Thanks for the clarification.

I was under the impression that if I change it for a movie, it only sticks for myself?

The whole point (I thought) of this setting we are currently discussing, is that is set on the server level?

The setting like TV only affects you. In the web app a user whom you gave access to should have a “Settings” option in overflow menu for a show to do it themselves

Aside from removing the alternate language tracks, you cannot over-ride another account’s language settings on a per show or movie basis. If the user prefers English, and there is an english track, Plex will select that for that user by default every time, regardless of what you do server-side.

This is why I mentioned removing the language track up above. If you wish to force someone to watch a movie in another language, you can either remove the language from the file (MKVUtils), or… mis-label the foreign language track to claim it is english?
That option seems scummy, So I’d recommend you just remove the track. If you do this, but wish to include the English track dub for anyone else, consider making a “foreign Language” “alternate edition” of the movie, and title it as such.

Oooh I didn’t realize that. Thanks for the explanation.

But I must say, in that case it is a very weird place to put the option for the server owner. You are editing the show after all. All other changes in there will apply for all other users of your server. Except just that specific one.

With that in mind, are you entirely sure it only applies to me? It’s really not implied anywhere.

Also, since I can’t see it myself, would you mind showing me a screenshot how the overflow looks that you speak of so I can tell other users of this?

Thanks for the tips. I’ll probably strip them out of the files but we’ll see. The alternative edition idea sounds nice but would probably be overkill.

I’ll pass the feedback along to appropriate team.

Yes. Create a managed user give it access to your tv library, switch to them, and you can see for yourself.

These images are from a user with access, not the server admin

I very much appreciate the images. Thanks!

Ah, I see. Yes, I see how the confusion came about, and I agree that something needs to change. Since the Pencil edit icon is used to set the audio language of the show, it implies that it kind of overrides the default behavior for this show for everyone else, not the current admin user.

Either it needs to be moved out of the Pencil edit icon and to the triple dot “Settings” menu as it is for non-admins, or you can actually set it so the audio language settings ARE changed for all users for this one show.

Precisely.
