The latest information I have, from the announcement above, means:
There is no Premium music at this time (temporarily)
The first step in the new mechanism is to have only one type of library (Music). Library types “Basic Music” and “Premium Music” were problematic. They’ve removed that.
Engineering is still completing the process of moving the new Premium Music internal to PMS
There is no other information (AFAIK) about when ‘formal’ Premium Music will return.
I am just getting a bit worried here to be honest.
I throw a party this friday and was looking forward to ‘show off’ plex to a couple of friends with plex mix.
IMO artist radio works less good because it just keeps playing english tracks while I start dutch rap, it even started playing Davina Michelle - Skyward which is totally a different genre and doesn’t have anything to do with the artists. (Don’t worry I have plenty artists in the same genre and related artists so that probably has nothing to do with this)
It also took very long to find any thing about why there are no gracenote options and why plex mix does not work
Is there any info about how the new plex mix will work?
Will it work almost the same
Will it be available to non-plexpass users (because music libraries won’t be seperate from premium libraries)
What system will it be based on
Also is there a expectation how long it will take untill the dust settles and there is a new system (even if it is not fully functional yet)
There is no way of knowing when Engineering will turn Premium music on again.
We don’t know what their plans are.
This one is being held very close to the chest.
As a result, making any plans with dates is probably not the best idea.
Will it function again, yes.
Will it be the same or better, we hope so.
We do know PlexPass features will ‘enable’ automatically just like they do for Movies and Television libraries do now.
I know this isn’t much to go on but it’s as all we have.
I know, for now, we all have Basic music capabilities. If you can accomplish what you wanted with what you have onboard, great.
The letdown here is that you can’t add anything new. If it’s running, I wouldn’t restart it either. Restarting updates feature flags. Flags which could turn off something you’re currently counting on but it sounds like you’ve already lost what you were hoping to use.
I hope that Plex are not planning to solely rely on MusicBrainz for “moods” and “genres”. Gracenote’s proprietary platform might have been just that, but Plex Mix based on Gracenote was one of the best algorithmic mixes I’ve EVER had the pleasure of using. Real shame that’s MIA.
As for MusicBrainz (I use Picard and beets) unless you’re literally listening to the most popular music, MusicBrainz is rubbish, I have to manually add/edit way too much of my music so beets works, and what is there is literally just as basic as it comes in terms of metadata.
So just to be clear a set of features was completely disabled that was one of the major perks of having a plex pass on the music side and we don’t even get an email about it being disabled with a timeline or some kind of explanation of what is going on other than a mention in the forum announcements that made it sound like if we upgraded to the newest version we would continue to be able to use those features?
I tag along with @themana. I received an e-mail announcement on the 28th of June though.
It is not explicit at all on when the changes will be available. It is just said the changes will have an impact on adding new music to Premium Music libraries.
But what’s the most confusing part, and this is the issue, it is said :
If you’re currently running an older server version, make sure you grab and install the latest release from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/ to keep things running smoothly.
Nowhere in the email is the last bit that is ONLY in the posted announcement :
Also: Please note that starting July 1, Plex Mix and the ability to create new Premium Music Libraries will be temporarily unavailable. We’re working on some big improvements in these areas as well.
This is a big communication issue, and for my part, mislead me into thinking that unless I updated my PMS version, I would not be able to use the Premium Music feature anymore…
Everything is turned off at Plex.tv right now so version doesn’t matter. 1.16.2 has memory leak bug fixes in it. Might be a good idea to go with it.
As for Music:
The old structure: Basic Music and Premium Music (distinct types) is being removed.
The new structure (needed for a LONG time), one common “Music” library type.
The library can support all the premium features when a Plex Pass is present but till simply “fall back” to it’s basic equivalent (not display) when not present.
There’ll be no more flip flop and losing data between the two worlds.
From what I heard, everything is going well. I am afraid to say “soon” because that’s a too-often used term. Giving any sense of finite time is unfair either way (optimistic or pessimistic). I also know it’s the priority. Fingers crossed all the testing goes well.
So in short, they will save loads of money by ending their contract with gracenote. And we are impacted because the premium libraries are “currently unavailable”.
Now thats nice.
And, I’m quite currious how plex will manage to be as efficient as gracenote when it will come to fingerprinting.
Hopefully, they will use musicbrainz / discogs as providers, as I always underlined discogs has a LOT of covers which were not automatically grabbed using gracenote.
I think you might be underestimating the amount of metadata they got from last.fm. Pretty sure when I rebuilt my library recently there was no premium music library option available and it was more efficient than with gracenote…just missing the crucial “mood” and has rougher genres.
Thinking out loud my ultimate setup would be genres from rateyourmusic (they don’t have an api), moods from gracenote or “equivalent”, and release and track data from discogs/last.fm/musicbrainz. But for $7 a month that these guys have to stretch many ways, I think I might be dreaming.
