I’m not sure how to put a better subject text.
I have long wanted to have a way to open the “Plex cloud metadata” version of a movie or show from my local version. As far as I know, this hasn’t been possible, and so I have to search for it and then pick “more ways to watch”. This works.
Now then, in the new Android app there is a dedicated “more ways to watch” button, which is great, but it actually doesn’t seem to list the “more ways to watch” entry? It shows other servers. That’s fine but it would be nice if it included the “Plex cloud metadata” entry too. As the name implies.
If this is intentional then I feel like that is a huge missed opportunity. Is it a bug or must a get used to searching also in this new client?
I mean if you can’t find a way to phrase it why not make the header of the popup clickable and that would take you to the “more ways to watch” section? I mean this:
So I think the behavior you’re looking for is actually found in Web. The More Ways to Watch button in Web takes you to the Discover detail page. In the new mobile app experience as you showed, More Ways to Watch simply brings up a view of availabilities of where you could watch a title. This view would also show any Streaming Services that you selected in addtion to any PMS availabilities and any that you didn’t select would be found in a More style result. Obviously the Account setting opt-out Display Availabilities From other Streaming Services On Detail Pages impacts what is seen here.
I guess I’m wondering what would be the purpose of linking to the Discover detail page, now that the differences between PMS and Discover detail pages is minimal? The only differences between the PMS detail page and the Discover detail page in the new mobile experience is any customizations (posters, art, tags, etc.) you’ve made on your PMS (pending any advanced library and account opt-out settings) and the Discover detail page may have some additional related hubs (More from [Actor], More from [Studio], etc.). The More Ways to Watch action is providing exactly that, locations of where you could watch the title and starting playback quickly. Is it the additional hubs in the Discover detail page that you’re wanting?
Thank you for the detailed answer. I appreciate it.
Well, the reasons I do it sometimes are these:
-
For TV shows, it’s very useful to see if there exists additional seasons or episodes which I don’t have stored locally. This is one of the best things about the discover details page.
-
For movies, it’s useful to see if there exists sequels which I don’t have stored locally (by seeing if there exists a collection)
-
Yes, sometimes as you say, it can be useful to see similar movies which I don’t have available locally. Especially since you can then go down an “exploration rabbit hole” and just keep going deeper and deeper without being restricted to local media.
I for one think that the discover details page on Plex is a game changer and I use it often for these things. Which is why I’d hoped you’d make it available more easy. The new “more ways to watch” button is perfect for this, and frankly I think it would be even better if the “more ways to watch” simply took you directly to the discover details page. Then one can pick “where to watch” and pick server.
Anyway thanks for taking it into consideration.
