Pro Week ‘25: Fireside in the Forum Question Submissions

When will we get the auto download feature to return to Android devices, this was wonderful for us that want to watch TV shows from our servers whilst disconnected on metro systems with no network connections. We could set up download 5 unwatched shows and it would slowly move through the series downloading what is needed to the device. But since the UI update I have to manually download the initial episodes, Refresh the metadata after each watch when I am back on line, delete the ones I have watched, and download more. Also if this can also work for Movie Playlists then even better.

Thank you for another Fireside Chat this year, as has become tradition. I look forward to this every year now. :slightly_smiling_face:

Will nested collections ever come to Plex?

Side note: does the current infrastructure even allow for this, or was scaling not really considered when the backend was initially designed? I know we have the ability to link collections, but that’s not the same thing and that feature is rather limited if I’m being honest (only works if you give your collections the same name across different libraries).

The ability to have, say, a Middle-earth collection, with sub collections for LotR, The Hobbit, Rings of Power, the animated movies, etc. would be truly spectacular. This also leads me into my second official question…

Will the ability to have mixed libraries/collections/spotlight rows on home screen ever come to Plex? Is this on the roadmap at all? Being bandied about internally in a ‘hmm, that’d be nice’ sort of way, at least?

A scrolling hero/customizable spotlight splash screen at the top of the home screen would be an electric addition if I do say so myself (no auto trailers though, please - or at least make it so that it’s up to the server admin if they want that feature turned on or off). Something like this, which already exists in Jellyfin, for example:

I beg you: please don’t ignore this post. I know I’m not alone in wanting at least some sort of official Plex acknowledgment of these feature requests - even if it’s a resounding ‘no, it’s not possible and we can’t see these ever being added at this point, sorry’.

Thank you for your time!

Hi,

In the fireside chat 2024 you made this post replying to me, saying that an issue we were having has been added to the backlog to take a look at:

Since then, we have had no replies to our posts and threads about the issue, and the issue has not been resolved. Can you please tell us what your word means when you say things like this and then nothing happens? It certainly feels like Plex staff are saying words to keep us quiet, but then not following up on those words.

The issue seems such a small one that it would take engineers very little time to fix, however it is causing many of us huge issues where we cant play our media.

One year later, can you give us any update on this issue please? Thanks very much.

Plex and Zidoo

Hi McWanke,
This is my first time participating in this forum, and I don’t even know where to ask my question, so I’m trying my luck here.
I’ve had a Plex pass for many years.
I’d like to know if there’s any chance we’ll ever get full Plex on a Zidoo machine?
I mean, the same Plex as on the Nvidia Shield, with all the Plex features, but with the benefits of HiFi audio and video playback on the Zidoo UHD8000?
That would be pure nirvana.
I hope to get an answer.
Thanks for your excellent work.
Joenas

Is there an ETA for the transcode support for av1 in windows? I’ve encoded most of my content in this format but I need the software to support this on windows. It’s been a while since it should have been supported.

Hi, there! In the older version of the iOS application, I was able to play downloaded TV show episodes via playlist. I love to fall asleep to some of my favorite shows and playlists are the way I keep them playing throughout the night. When I’m traveling, I download the episodes in case of bad internet (for instance, on a cruise). The new version of the iOS application doesn’t have the option to play the downloads through a playlist, so I can’t keep them playing. Will the new iOS application get back the ability to play downloaded content via a playlist?

Fireside Awesome Question! Note - this is either a dupe or very similar to the question posed here. Hopefully that answer covers what is being asked here, if not, feel free to ask another question!

Would love to have PlexAmp support smart speakers (Echo’s etc) in the way Spotify does! Ability to select individual speakers or speaker groups —without having Bluetooth involved.

Are there any plans to look into how the new apps are reporting quality settings back to the server?

There used to be a play original default option, but now you have to select Maximum and then it tries to transcode 480p video up to 4k.

The PVR Web interface has not been updated or received attention in quite some time. There are several buggy things that happen with fast forwarding and rewinding live tv as well as issues when the time becomes greater, even though plenty of resources are available to the server.

Is there potentially a future plan to revamp the web pvr interface, potentially add keyboard fast forwarding similar to that found in normal playback, and address other PVR web client playback issues in the near future (and that’s why its been omitted for so long?)

  • hopeful lifelong user
  • plex server + hdhomerun primes running edge/chrome web clients on tvs

Are we going to hear more about the next version of Plexamp? It feels like it’s been in the works for a long time and we hear very little.

Of course my wishlist includes:

  • better multi artist support
  • Visible disc titles
  • learning what the plan post-Tidal support is
  • the future of AI in the app.

Is Watch Together currently in the plans to return for in app usage? Will other features from the original plex apps be added over time into the newer apps?

And is the “open and documented API” announced earlier this year in a blog post still being worked on and would it be capable of re-implementing beloved old features, if they aren’t planned? What sort of capabilities are in the plan for the API?

Just add PLEX and LETTERBOXD integration/sync … that would be the ultimate pair/feature IMHO.

Plex could evolve far beyond being just a media server/player into a cinephile hub that connects personal media collections with social discovery and curation. Here’s what could be done:

What Plex Could Do with Letterboxd Integration

1. Seamless Watchlist Sync

  • Any film you add to your Letterboxd watchlist would appear inside Plex as a highlighted “to watch” entry.

  • Plex could instantly show you: “This title is already in your library” or “Stream available on [service].”

2. Unified Watch History

  • Watching a film in Plex would automatically log it in Letterboxd:

    • Mark as watched.

    • Sync your star rating and review (if you want).

    • Update lists you’ve joined (e.g., Horror October Challenge).

3. Smart Discovery

  • Plex could pull Letterboxd data to recommend:

    • Trending films across the platform.

    • “Because you liked…” suggestions based on your Letterboxd taste graph.

    • Films your friends recently watched and rated highly.

4. Social Layer Inside Plex

  • On each Plex title page, you’d see:

    • Reviews from your Letterboxd friends.

    • Global average ratings.

    • Popular lists that include this film (Criterion Essentials, Best of 1970s Sci-Fi).

  • You could rate or log films directly without leaving Plex.

5. Collection Management & Curation

  • Plex could auto-tag your library with Letterboxd metadata: genres, moods, eras, themes.

  • Automatic collections generated from Letterboxd lists:

    • “1001 Movies to See Before You Die” → instantly visible as a Plex playlist.

    • Personal custom lists mirrored as Plex libraries.

6. Statistics & Year in Review

  • Plex could show the same type of analytics Letterboxd offers, but tailored to your actual playback:

    • Films watched per decade, country, or genre.

    • “You watched 42 noirs this year — 12% more than last year.”

    • Compare with community or friends.

7. Extra Materials & Reviews

  • Plex could surface external content linked to Letterboxd entries:

    • YouTube essays, podcasts, behind-the-scenes.

    • Reviews curated by critics or friends.

Fireside Note: This looks to be a feature request for the creation of an integration. Please feel free to post this as a suggestion in the Feature Suggestions, forum area.

This has been discussed before on the forum and it was not possible on the AppleTV prior to tvOS 26.

So the question is now, with the release of tvOS 26, will we see audio passthrough supported in the Plex app?

I don’t mean audio pass through (which is confirmed not possible in tvos26) but actually just outputting atmos like infuse currently does, at the moment Plex outputs 5.1 instead of atmos but infuse will output atmos.

When is the ability to locally host/manage Clear Logo images coming to Plex Media Server?

You’re forcing people onto the new interface, which uses them, but not giving them any tools to control them.

Silicon Valley lives by the mantra “Fail early, fail often”. Others preach “fail intelligently”. In either mindset, you have to be able to recognize failure.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of posts detailing the spectacular failure of the completely unredeemable new apps this year - no need to rehash it all here.

The question is why? Infuriating your loyal customers has a cost. What is the point? Where does this lead to?

Perhaps you could shed some light on the product roadmap. Some of us are trying to evaluate if it’s worthwhile to stay with Plex. Others are already jumping ship. Some clarity (since a course correction seems unlikely at this point) would be helpful.

While it’s great having apps for different device types, sometimes all you have (access to) is a browser. Trying to get th Plex server to NOT transcode and leave it to the client to figure it out is often flat out impossible. At a guess, most clients have more CPU horsepower than the Plex servers, so could we please have a feature that says just send the data stream and then the browser envronment can do what it can? It doesn’t have to be a general setting in the server, but it should be possible from any web client. If there is such a feature already, then I have never managed to get it set correctly. It is frustrating when playback never starts and there is a little message (usually hidden offscreen) complaining about CPU or disk space, or whatever.

Do you have any comment on the new Roku UI? It is very unpopular and, aside from one post, we have not heard from Plex at all about it. Are there plans to address any of the reported issues?

Can we get an update on the current status of an Audio Book Library?
Will there ever be a slideshow functionality added to the Photos in Apple tvOS?

Speaking of Apple tvOS, currently all media types are still supported within the single app (video, photos, music). What are the current plans for this app and will music always be included in the app? Or will stand alone photo and music apps be created for Apple tvOS? Casting from my iphone to my Apple TV box which feeds the audio system is not a feature win for me.

Is there any plan for local server authentication?

I know these next few are feature requests, but feature requests seldom if ever result in responses from Plex in that forum…..
Can we create aliases for the user names?
Can we have a generic audio library type for audio files that aren’t music?
Can we have better support for multi disk music sets such as the ability to name each album in a multi disk set?
Can we have the ability to completely remove all history of a user that once had access years ago but is no longer there?
Can the Photos app allow us to grant specific users the ability to add metadata information like a comment field when sharing family photos? This would allow people to provide names and dates if known.
Thank you.
