So I might have done something stupid. We have been using plex as a family for years and I have never made separate users in my plex account for my wife and 2 kids. they always just logged on and went to the kids movies library. I do have a plex pass for life membership. I have just bought an Ipod Touch for my daughter and wanted to install plex on there and give her access to certain libraries.
As I vaguely remember that some of my clients (Xbox one) don’t handle different users in Plex all too well I decided to create a new plex user account for my daughter. I was thinking I will just share the kids libraries with her and have the same effect without creating additional users withing my plex account that might mess up my user experience on some of my clients at home.
Of course adding the app with unlimited experience on IOS costs money (which I forgot). so I paid the 5 euro, however now the app on my daughters phone will not recognize this purchase which was made from her own icloud account. I keep on getting an error message saying oops something went wrong try that again later. When I repurchase Apple does tell me I will get it for free as I already bought it but the app itself just does not pick it up.
So the questions I have are
should I just have created users in my plex account that has plex pass and is my info on trouble with the xbox one totally outdated?
Was I right to do this even though it is a waste of money but if so how do I get the app to recognize the purchase… is this a known bug?
what is the limited experience exactly on her app if I just plainly don’t get this to work?
I know this must seem like a stupid story but all help is welcome
@asaweli gonna try to answer few questions until someone more experienced than me can help you.
You could have created “Managed User Accounts” which is basically no means of creating an account from start, and Managed users have access to everything, unlimited.
Well… buying the App is a one time purchase (within iOS platform) which unlocks the limit. If you wanted to create for her another separate account, you can just add her to your “My Home” instead of “friends” and she will have all the plex benefits as you.
Limited Experience on Mobile App is for people who don’t own Plex Pass and using the free version app. It basically feels as a demo. When you playback any media, it will only play it for 1 minute and then closes. If you get plex pass or purchase it (a one time purchase), then there will not be any limit to the duration, and you can watch any media on that mobile platform for as long as you want.
EDIT: I for one use Xbox One for my family, and have my wife created her own account and added her to “My Home”, while I did a managed user account for both my daughter and my nephew. Never experienced any problems ever.
Goto Plex Web UI (either by going http://localhost:32400/web if you’re on the PMS PC, or by http://server.local.ip.address:32400/web if on the same network but different PC, or by https://plex.tv/web)
Goto Settings then goto Users Tab.
Under Users Tab you will see “My Home” and “Friends” … Goto “My Home”
On the top right (just under Users tab) you will see “Add User” and “Enable Guest” …(a third button called “Leave Home” will be visible only if you already created a Home group)
Click on Add User, and a pop window will appear
Choose “Create Managed User” and give it a name, also on the left side you can see your server name (choosing it will let you choose which library to share with) and Restriction (you can restrict certain contents or movies within the library).
