Problem naming series with different named multipart episodes

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2711
Player Version#: 1.9.0.1203-00f2b4d9

I’m trying to set up a TV naming convention, and can’t seem to get it to work:

Something Like:

/TV
    /Mystery! (1980)
            /My First Mystery
                   /Mystery name 1 - S01E01.mov
                   /Mystery name 1 - S01E02.mov
            /My Second Mystery
                   /Mystery name 2 - S01E01.mov
                   /Mystery name 2 - S01E02.mov

Basically under Mystery (or Masterpiece theater) there are multipart shows (or single shows) separated from others by name. How do I name them?

try

/TV
/Mystery (1980)
/Season 01
/Mystery (1980) (S01E01) Mystery name 1.mov
/Mystery (1980) (S01E02) Mystery name 2.mov
/Season 02
/Mystery (1980) (S02E01) Mystery name 1.mov
/Mystery (1980) (S02E02) Mystery name 2.mov

Seasons cannot be named. Gotta do like @nydave69 says above if you want Plex to get metadata automatically https://www.thetvdb.com/series/345853

I appreciate the advice, but I still can’t see what I’m doing wrong. Here’s a picture of my file system, and also the Plex that still doesn’t show program names.Plex

there is no season 21 of Mystery on TVDB. https://www.thetvdb.com/series/345853 It cannot get online metadata that does not exist.

Also if you were not aware Plex will not take episode names from the file names.

To use your local poster file make sure local media assets is enabled. Which is also what picks up embedded metadata in mp4s ( don’t think it will work with .mov files but never tried)

@BigWheel Thanks… You should have found Season 21 as I added it… It DID exist in Real life. Next, I was playing with the format and got it to work.File System

No I didn’t know you couldn’t add your own names… sad, but thanks.

odd. I’m thinking that renaming it just caused the server to rescan. I see season 21 now but I had to type it in the URL manually. It didn’t show on the main page for that show for me.

entries in the TVDB are temporary till they are reviewed…

I’d like to say, while not the official way as listed on the FAQ’s and such. Would you disagree with me if I said you could use season names if they are enclosed in square brackets [ ]? I mean, Plex does ignore such content in brackets.
Example below is just one of the shows I include additional info for seasons. Again, not official but rather a “cheat” so to speak.

Season 01 [Murder House]
Season 02 [Asylum]
Season 03 [Coven]
Season 04 [Freak Show]
Season 05 [Hotel]
Season 06 [Roanoke]
Season 07 [Cult]
Season 08 [Apocalypse]

If someone makes a feature suggestion I won’t stop them. I’ve got nothing personally against it.

I think there needs to be some way to incorporate Series names. There are many shows that name a series, but there’s no obvious way to tell Plex. Either the Show/Program name includes the series name, in which case each such series would not be linked as part of the same show as other series, or each episode includes the series name which can get rather long if the episodes each also have their own name/title.

Ideally, Plex should be able to handle named series (perhaps in the filename within as suggested above), but then display that name in the player. With the Series number prepended, it would still sort correctly, but would also show the correct information on screen.

So just like Episodes may or may not have a name, Series are the same and Plex should work with either.
