Plex showing wrong TV Episode names

Server Version#: 4.30.2

I’m having an issue with episode naming of a new (second) season of a show.
I do think that they might have been mixed up naming initially - i.e. the episodes may have been named out of order and had some wrong metadata/pics downloaded for them.

After I saw plex wasn’t identifying them right I made sure to rename them properly and I deleted and redownloaded/recreated all metadata and matching jpg files.

These are MKV files and have no local embedded metadata as far as I can tell.
I have also done the “Plex Dance” several times:

  • Remove episode files, rescan library, empty trash, clean bundles, put episodes back, rescan library.

Plex now shows almost everything right. All of the episodes have the right picture shown, and episodes 1-6, 9, and 10 are named correctly. However Episode 7 is named what Episode 8’s name is and Episode 8 is the same name as Episode 2.

Again, there is no local metadata on the MKV files (as far as I can tell), TheTVDB has the right info listed for the series, the files are named appropriately (e.g. Series Title - 2x07 - Episode Name.mkv), and I’ve done the Dance multiple times.

Ideas?

That’s close, but not quite correct. Plex expects the season/episode information in the form SxxEyy. So, for your example, Series Title - S02E07 - Episode Name.mkv. To be even more specific, Plex expects the folder layout to be:

TV Shows\ <--- Library points here, name unimportant
     Series Title\
          Season XX\
               Series Title - SXXEYY - Episode Name.mkv

Your format may work to a point, but it will likely break eventually. That may be what you’re seeing here. Try naming the files/paths per Plex’s guidelines and try the Plex Dance again.

If that doesn’t help, please share your actual file names and folder paths in a screenshot.

Well you may be correct about what might be considered 100% official, but what I can say is I’ve been a Plex user for over 5 years and never seen this before.

I have Sonar handle all my file naming, and this series is in the same format I have used forever. I currently have at least a dozen other current shows in my library with the same formats and folder structures and never seen this issue before.

I will try a rename as you suggest and see if it does something, but I’m not optimisitc.

Fair enough. And, to be clear, I’m not saying that your naming is definitely the cause of the issue; it could be something else entirely. It’s just good practice to follow the guidelines to give Plex its best chance to do the right thing.

Twilight Zone (2019) Season 2?

Something strange with that one. Even if named exactly to Plex specifications, using mkv files w/ no embedded metadata, and Local Media Assets at the bottom of the list, the displayed episode names are still wrong.

YES! That’s it. I’ve tried everything suggested above and more and still an issue. I’ll go ahead and continue on in that thread.

Thanks.
