Problem playing 4K media

if you read the very first post you’ll notice I’m having problems with Plex on both Chromecast Ultra and Apple TV 4K.

I agree Plex is a fraction of a (very) decent player, however answer me this (you’ll find my answers for each question):
Can you play the original 4K movies with absolutely no problem in Plex? (this thread says No)
Can you play the original M2TS file in Plex? (No)
Can you play Dolby Digital TrueHD in Plex? (No)
Can you play Dolby Atmos in Plex? (No)
Can you play DTS-HD MA in Plex? (No)
Can you play DTS X in Plex? (No)
Can you play lossless 96/24 audio files in Plex? (No)
Can you play lossless 192/24 audio files in Plex? (No)
Can you play DSD audio files (SACD) in Plex? (No)

The answer is Yes for all these questions if you try to play it on the Oppo Player.

So, yes, Plex is a fraction of the cost of the Oppo Player, but it is also a fraction of a decent solution, at least in my opinion.

You prefer Plex? Have at it, bud but please try not to minimize the problem I had and the fact that NO ONE answered my question…

Thanks,

Flavio Santini

Infuse for Apple TV, no problem at all, plays 4K films with ease.
I can’t get PLEX to play 4K either no matter what I do, it’s just a spinning wheel.

If you want to stream 4K HDR Content in plex then you need one of very few devices, even now a year later the only ones that I have found that do it correctly are the Nvidia Shield TV and the Xbox One (S in my case) but obviously, a One X will have the horsepower.

The Chromecast ultra doesn’t work right with the audio if you have any of the HD audio codecs in your files. I personally rip my 4K BD’s to mkv with all of the audio tracks.

Either way, you will have to make sure that you have a steady network connection and the speed will have to be at least around 100Mb a sec if you want everything to go smoothly. If plex tries to transcode at all you will lose the HDR first thing, defeating the purpose for most of us.

Infuse does work pretty well especially with the latest updates, but it still has problems with some audio from my rips. Can’t remember off the top of my head but some of what works perfectly in the plex client on my shield TV fails to play audio in infuse. But the latest plex integration is a huge step forward for the app. Unfortunately Hulu on Apple TV still doesn’t support 5.1 audio yet.

I’m having the same issue trying to play 4K media From a high power Linux based HTPC to my Sony Bravia A8F. No dice. Plex can’t handle 4k media it seems. Which is just Ludacris. It says that the network connection is too slow… it’s on direct play.
Now I’ve tried searching up the file via DLNA and I can play it.
This basically means that Plex is inferior to the decades old DLNA server…

Get back, You don’t know Plex like that!

Plex is not inferior to vanilla DLNA. In fact it has it’s own DLNA server built in. I run Plex Server on a Late 2017 iMac with a direct attached Thunderbolt 3 Drobo. I have no problems playing any 4K HDR rips from my original UHD’s. There are basically 3 places that can end up being a bottleneck for playing 4K media.

  1. Disk Throughput of Client and Server
  2. Network Speed
  3. Server and\or Client Processor.

Since you said that you are using a high power Linux PC, I am going to assume that you have everything covered regarding the PC and your network throughput.

But what I would do is get a hold of the Jelly fish demos scaling between the lowest bandwidth you think your network can handle and as high as you want to go. Then play each of them over your network via Android interface and then with a USB 3.0 flash drive. This way you can verify that it’s the plex or wireless network (or wired, you never know) that is having the problem with connection rather than the TV it self.

Or if you want to make your life east just get a shield TV and the problem will likely just go away. Plex on my shield TV NEVER has had an issue playing my 4K media, almost every other incarnation of platform and app has had an issue. Example Plex on the Xbox One S that plays UHD Discs just fine can’t play the rips from my plex server hardly at all.

Good Luck.
