Problems with matching Files

Hi all.

I’m going ballistic with one of my movies.
I downloaded the movie in two different files and languages (english/german) and added the movie.
(I can’t merge the audio into one file because it’s not in sync with the video file)

Now I split the movie apart so that it would be there in two different languages. So far so good.
But. When I matched one of the two to the German version, it changed both of them to German. Not the plan obviously!!
So I moved both files from the harddrive, deleted everything from Plex and put it back on to start over.

And now the big problem: My library is in English. But when I scan the library files it adds the movie in German. And fixing the match to English does exactly nothing.

So my questions are:

  1. How can I have the movie added in English??
  2. How can I split a movie and match one in a different language??

I mean, that should be possible, right?

It’s really pissing me off that it adds the movie in German just because I fixed the match once to German and now it doesn’t let me change it to English anymore.

Any ideas?

This is not a scenario I have tested but could you split them apart and then under the advanced settings for each movie set the metadata language to each language you want for each split movie ?

Failing that you would always just edit the fields I guess which should lock them with the edits you make.

Ok, so thanks to your idea I can at least switch the language again.

Thank you for that.

But I still can’t manage to have one of them with the Metadata in English and the other one in German.
Because when I split them apart and then change the Metadata language as in your picture, it does not change the language of the description. So when I then fix the match to the other language it merges the movies together again and I can start all over again.

It seems like I can split them apart but there is no way to have different Metadata languages.

I don’t understand why Plex keeps merging the movies together even after splitting them apart. The movies are saved in two totally different file names (english original and german original) and still Plex doesn’t realize that I want it to treet the two movies as two totally different movies.

Why isn’t there a simple button to tell this program to not regard one and another?
Why does Plex want to be the smart ass and keep people from having duplicates when it’s just what we want?

This sucks balls. But thanks for the idea.

Mmmm…

How are the media files named on disk? Are both versions of the movie in the same top level folder? Wonder if the matcher is merging them after a split as the files are in the same folder.

I edited my earlier post…

I just tried moving one of the files to a whole different location but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

As you can see the movie names and locations should indicate that they are two totally different movies.

But Plex realizes it’s the same movie and tries to be a smart ass and keep me from adding a duplicate.

So I have no chance of changing only one of the Metadata because like I said, when I do, it merges them back together into the fixed language. I can then split them apart, change the Metadata on one of them and then it just merges them back together. It’s a loop I’m stuck in and I can’t manage to get Plex to seperate the movies and let me handle them the way I want to

If I get some time later I’ll try this scenario and see if I can get it to work. I sense Plex will see it as somewhat of an edge case but lets see if we can get it working.

I do wonder if a full plex dance with both of these movie versions (all the steps) in their separate folders might help. Plex can stubbornly hold onto data in its db so the dance would help clear that out and break the loop your in.

Lets see if anyone else jumps in with an idea.

OH, just realised that if you created a separate library that it most likely work. Not ideal I’ll grant you but maybe a fallback option if everything else fails.

I tried doing the plex dance twice.
Once with the files in the same folder location and once again with the files in different locations (as shown in my last post) but to no avail.

I believe it has something to do with the fact that Plex automatically merges duplicates, which in general is a good thing, but in my case I would wish for a feature that lets users turn that off.

Thanks again for the help. Interested to see what you can get out of the scenario.

The seperate library is not really an option for me. I don’t see the sense in it for just one or two movies
For now I just renamed the German one manually so it’s displayed with the German name. However the metadata is still in English. Of course it would be nice if the metadata were also in German but at least the title is in German this way and you can search for it that way.

I ran some tests this morning but unfortunately I could not get this scenario to work and experienced the same results you got.

I’m guessing guid=“plex://movie/xxxxx” which is used in matching and linking stuff does not allow the same movie to have two records so it eventually merges them together after we split them apart and they are scanned / matched again.

Not sure this is possible without having separate libraries which again is not ideal either. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

That’s too bad. Well we can’t have everything…

The manual change of the name takes care of the biggest part of it, since the movie can be searched for like that in the German name. So in the end it’s only the metadata that is in the wrong language, but hey, let them learn some English.

Thanks for trying and putting that effort in for me.
Really appreciate it !!

After you split the entries apart, did you then right click and unmatch each? If not, the server will still consider them a single entity. (It took me YEARS to figure this out.)

If you did, of course ignore me…
