Problems with PMS 1.43.0.10467 on Synology server

Server Version#: 1.43.0.10467
Player Version#:
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

You should be able to rollback using this process: Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and How-To's - #14 by ChuckPa

Can get the package from here to do the manual install method: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=nas&plat=synology-dsm72

Bless you for this help! This works perfectly and allowed me to repair my system by rollback to a good version of PSM.

What do you mean by subtitles are unuseable?

They were totally out of sync when played with any plex player, although VLC showed the subtitles were perfect for the audio

Auto-Sync Subtitles

  1. Which clients? Plex Web, Android mobile, etc.

  2. Which subtitle type? SRT/ASS/etc. Embedded, external, etc.

  3. In Settings → Library, is Generate voice activity data enabled?

  4. For each library, is Enable voice activity detection enabled?

  5. If #3 & #4 are enabled, does it make a difference if you enable/disable subtitle sync during playback?

The details will help Plex replicate/fix the issue.

We’ve also received reports that burning in the subtitles fixes the issue. A small number of users are experiencing this issue that somehow survived 9 months of testing, however i am having trouble getting logs/a sample from users to help reproduce the issue

I use subtitles because I’m 81 years old and hearing impaired. Most of the people I share my movies with are not hearing impaired and do not want subtitles burned in. The fix of rolling back has fixed the problem, and I’m grateful for your assistance.

Burning in subtitles is a client setting and does not get applied to every user

  1. The affected playback clients include Plex Web, Android mobile, and all versions of ROKU Plex Player.
  2. Subtitle types in my library include ASS/SRT/PGM and are embedded using Handbrake to make .mkv files
  3. No, I have never enabled “generate voice activity data”
  4. No, I have never enabled voice activity detecttion
  5. Moot question since 3 and 4 are both negative

My movie files are .mkv format with embedded (not external) subtitles which are selectable as on or off. I can choose to have subtitles enabled or not. The movies all play perfectly using VLC player, and subtitles are in perfect sync with the audio track during VLC playback. The problem only exists when using any Plex Player from a Plex Server stream. In other words, the movies are fine but not properly rendered by PMS 1.43..0.10467 They are properly rendered with previous versions of PMS, and I have rolled back to the previous version with great success.

I generate movie files with Handbrake and the option to burn in subtitles does carry over to anyone streaming movies from my server. You cannot turn it off in Plex Player since “burned in”: is hard-coded by Handbrake.

There is also an option for plex to burn it in for you durring transcode. This happens on a per client basis

Thanks for the update and details. That knocks out subtitle auto-syncing as a cause.

After more experimentation, it appears that the problem is not with the current PMS, but with the PLEX app provided to ROKU. The current ROKU PLEX app doesn’t play well with subtitles when the feed is from the current PMS. Apple TV plex app has no problem with subtitles on the new PMS, and neither does Amazon Fire Stick plex app..
