Problems with Remote Access on Mac Mini M4

Hello,

I have Plex Server 1.42.2, which is running on an M4 Mac Mini on macOS Sequoia, some media is on an external hard drive while most is on my NAS. It has been working fine, being able to share video with my friends and family around the globe. Recently, it hasn’t been able to do that. My friends/family did the plex.tv/link and while it connected, they were told they didn’t have access to my mac mini.

My mac mini, external hard drive and NAS are in my basement. They are connected together via a 10G unmanaged ethernet switch, to a 1G ethernet switch to an Eero then to my internet modem. It previously had no problem. Now when I look at the server, at remote access, it doesn’t have it. In the past, it would easily be fixed by disabling remote access then enabling remote access then all would be fine. Now that I try that, it quickly disables the remote access, then when enabling, it takes, on average, 4 minutes to connect to the server then a few seconds later, drops the link and is disabled again.

I have recently updated my Eero, it still has UPnP, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I do have a pihole but I never had trouble before and I have disabled the blocking while trying to regain remote access and that had made no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?

Any help will greatly be appreciated,

Thanks

Never mind,

I did what I should have done. I uninstalled and reinstalled Plex Media Server. I had to unpin all of the libraries and redo do them with the backed up com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist from ~/library/Preferences and the backed up Plex Media Server folder from User/”UserName”/Library/Application support. I also had to go into: Account settings > Plex home > and select each account for my server and give them access to all the libraries.

It was a slight pain but it fixes the problem, I hope I don’t have to do this again.

The problem with loss of remote access has come back. I tried to unistall and reinstall Plex, and using the backup: com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist and Plex Media Server folder from Application Support, but I still cannot get remote access. I can still access everything on my local network but cannot get access to the server from outside my network.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Are you still having this issue? Did you find a fix?

I have a near identical setup, and it was all working fine until recently. I haven’t used the feature for awhile so I’m not 100% sure when it stopped working. Also, I’d rather not manually open ports up on the firewall if at all possible.

Hello cyberhomie,

It is working now. I rebuilt my Plex server and Eero updated. Shutting down and Starting up a computer fixes many things. Cycling the Eero off and on, should be another thing to try.

I am port forwarding now on port 32400, on my Eero and Plex has remote access. Later Eero had a few updates, later I updated my Mac mini to MacOS 26, later Plex had an update; Plex still has remote access. I will be replacing an ethernet cable between my 10G ethernet switch in my basement and the ethernet switch connected to my Eero and modem ISP. That shouldn’t cause a problem.

Anyway, your Eero may need an update, if it didn’t already, also, cycle it off and on to see if that will be a quick fix. Port forwarding works for me, you can give it a try. The port forwarding setting needs to be done both on Plex and in Eero. To do so in Eero you’ll need to go into Settings > Advanced Networking > Reservations & Port forwarding > then choose your Mac reservation and “Open a port.” I didn’t need to alter the Mac firewall, it did that automatically.

Good luck, hope this helps.
