Progress is not saved in multi-part movie

I recently got the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Each movie spans two disks. I am aware of the option to join the two parts into one file with MKVToolNIX, but it is well documented that this creates an A/V sync issue at the join point, presumably due to an issue with overlapping information in the Atmos track. For the Nvidia Shield player, at least, keeping them as two separate files is recommended.

Everything looks and plays fine so far. However, I’ve noticed Plex does not save my progress in the movie. They’re very long movies and I’ve been watching in chunks. It does not show up in the “Continue Watching” section, it still shows as “Unplayed,” there is only a “Play” button (no “Resume” or “Play from Beginning”). And I have to find my place each time.

Is this expected behavior for multi-part movies? And if so, why?

I noticed today the same behavior on my multi-part Lord of Rings. This is definitely a bug. It has been a long time since I watched any of the movies, but it worked in the past.

Made it quite inconvenient for those really long movies. I also noticed that once I got past the first movie part it would start at the beginning of the second movie part, no matter what, and I could not navigate by chapters. I had to manually scrub to where I left off. I consoled myself by saying I would not watch those particular films often.
