Proper naming of MKV or MP4 Files

Hi Guys, I really tried to find the right answer, but I didn’t, so I have a question for you guys.
I’ve startet to digitalise my Blu Rays and I’m not sure which Format is the best for PLEX (MKV or MP4) and how to name it propery. I`m using a Blu Ray Ripper, but with mac version there is no “lossless” Format available. So I start with MKV Files, but without the lossless version all the infos like video format or sound format or subtitles are not included. Therefore, I can not see the sound format and the video format in the menu of the movie. Mostly it shows 1080p and for the sound stereo.
Can you guys tell me how to name the file so I can see the original movie infos in the movie menu :
For example: Drive.2008.Blu.ray.1080p.DTS_HD.5.1 it’s not working at all. What info do I need?

The file I dld, they have this kind of info, so I think these are windows file with the lossless format!

And another problem is with mac, the subs are hard coded and I can`t see them in the movie menu.

I hope you guys are able to understand my problem , if not I’m sorry, I’m not a native speaker.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
Best regards
Robert

As for „lossless“… you might want to have a look at MakeMKV. This app will leave the content in the quality available on the disc — also available for Mac

Hi Otto, thanks for your fast feedback. I started to read, but if Im honest. Its a bit to abstact for me and I did not understand it properly.

Hi Tom, thanks for your answer. I have videoSolo SW to make the Movie Files. And the windows version has a MKV lossless format and this one put a ll the movie infos into the file. The mac version did not have it. Thats my problem here and Im not that good with all this stuff. But maybe there is another company with a lossless MKV version for mac. But I couldnt find any. So I thought I can ask how to name the file properly, but like I said, the FAQ is to abstract for me.

I’ve just added the link in my post above… MakeMKV has been in (free) beta for years. Using it on my Mac almost as long

Naming is very straightforward: Movie (year).mkv. Leave out the other stuff.

Regarding your example, Drive.2008…, make sure you have the correct year. I did not see a movie or TV show with that name and year listed in IMDB.com or TheTVDB.com.

I`ll check it out, thanks again!

Hey Mr.Ford, thnaks for your feedback. The Link with Drive was just an fake example. This is a real one:

Gosford.Park.2001.English.1080p.HD-MA.5.1

What I can see in the movie menu is the 1080p, but sound shows only stereo. When I leave everything away how do I get the info in the menu of the movie?

My comment was in regard to file naming. If Plex is having trouble recognizing the movie, name it according to the Plex documentation, previously linked by OttoKerner.

Gosford Park (2001).mkv (or mp4 if appropriate).

Regarding the audio format, VideoSolo is probably converting the audio. Use MakeMKV as recommended by tom80H. MakeMKV copies the video and audio from the disc to your computer. It does not alter it in any way.

Edit: Looking at the picture you provided, VideoSolo is converting both the video and audio. Use MakeMKV.

Example: Blu-ray I ripped w/ MakeMKV and imported to Plex. You should see similar.
rip

To be more specific… the technical [explicit] is 100% irrelevant for Plex to determine what video/audio type and quality are in your videos. Plex will look this up on its own. So if your ripping software produces an “optimized” version, it’ll certainly no longer be in line with whatever source material you used as input.

Those 2 topics are not really related.

  1. try to stick as closely to the naming schema suggested by Plex for best matching results (=Plex recognizing what title it’s dealing with)
e.g. Gosford Park (2001) instead of Gosford.Park.2001.English.1080p.HD-MA.5.1 to match Gosford Park (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDb)

  2. if you want to keep the original quality you’ll need to find some different preset in VideoSolo or use a different software (e.g. MakeMKV) – if storage is not an issue… don’t optimize the files

I can see what you mean. I have to take MakeMKV liek you and Otto said. Thank you very much for your support! Its realy kind of you:-) Ill let you know afterwards how it worked.
Hava a nice evening!

I will try MakeMKV and the naming like you wrote to me. LEt you guys now afterwards.
Same to you, tahnks alot for your support and have anice evening!

one last question. Do you put the MKV File in a extra Folder and if yes, then both have exactly the same name, right?
Because I do it this way…thank you…

It is definitely the recommended way. Use the same recommended naming scheme for the folder name:
Movie Title (year)
That’s it.

Thanks again and sorry for so many questions, but it took some time for me to understand the way to do it…
Just making a copy of my Gosford Park BR with makeMKV…

That’s what the forum is for.
Your questions help other people too.

Hi guys, I did what you said and I used makeMKV to make copies of my Blu Rays. Now all the files have the moive infos, but I got a new problem now. The PLEX Media Server is not able to recognise the movies.
This is kind of strange…I made a second copy, same problem.
I dlded movies from the Internet, no problem.
Do you guys have an idea what could be the problem?
Thanks a lot in advance!

How did you name those files?
Plex recognizes your files based their file names… so as long as you go with how they should be named it should work just fine.
