PS3 Streaming Quality Setting Keeps Resetting

Hey Everyone,

First off thanks to the guys at Plex for such an awesome product! I love Plex!

However, I have one small problem...

When streaming (mostly direct play) to the PS3 over WiFi, I get some buffering on occasions so I change the streaming quality from the default of 7Mbs to 3Mbs. This then allows the movies to play without any buffering. It will keep that setting until the app is closed/PS3 turned off, and when it is reopened the streaming quality is set back to 7Mbs.

Is there a way to lock in the streaming quality like I can on my Android phone and tablet? Changing the quality every time i start Plex is a little annoying...

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Obviously by the lack of replies it is just me and no one else has this issue. Could someone please tell me how to lock in the streaming quality setting then please?

Have you tried changing the setting on your Plex media server instead? Settings>Web>Player

I had the same issues as you playing over wireless with the PS3 (actually sometimes had to change it lower to 3Mbps) and noticed the change wouldn't stick and had to keep changing it over and over. I tired changing the 'remote quality' down to 2Mbps but it didn't change anything on the PS3. Maybe change the 'local quality'? I'm not sure if local means playing on the same computer as your server or streaming inside you LAN. Same light, I wasn't sure if remote meant inside your LAN & outside your LAN or just ourside your LAN. Either way, play with that and report back. I fixed mine by going wired on the PS3 (if that's not an option for you, you could try ethernet-over-power - some friends of mine have tried that).

Those Desktop settings don't influence the app. We've talked about it but it's still in the air.

mrots are you changing the settings during playback or from the global Settings > Video > Local Quality?

If so, when you exit Plex are you exiting gracefully using the PS button or abruptly shutting the system down? (Maybe in the latter case the settings aren't flushing to disk storage).

Most of the time it is during playback. I will try from the global settings and see if that helps. Sorry, I didn't even think to check if the PS4 app had such a settings menu...

Yes, the setting is still not retained if I exit nicely with the PS button and "Quit"...

Thanks for your help!

Yep that's the ticket then. The Settings menu is under your avatar on the top right of the home screen. The settings chosen during playback aren't stored for playback on another video. We've talked a lot about playback settings per device, playback settings per individual playback, and playback settings per server. The way we present / save settings will is a point of emphasis for us.

For now do try the global settings. Wait a couple minutes after setting before you exit the app (PS3/PS4 don't save data to the HDD right away). Then when playing back your next video, the global settings will be used by default.

I've also noticed these settings don't stick.  I always gracefully shutdown the Plex app before shutting down the system.  Every time I launch content it tries to playback at the source quality.

Hasn't really been much of an issue for me because both systems are now hardwired.

Those Desktop settings don't influence the app. We've talked about it but it's still in the air.

Please implement something like this.  Having simple, ubiquitous control over even just LAN devices would be fantastic.  Some devices in my house simply cannot be wired.

Hey guys, I found the global setting and changing the stream quality there did the trick. Sorry to waste your time with this, i didn't think to look for a global setting...

We're definitely talking about making the settings made during video playback apply to the current server. That would have helped you out in this case. It's on us to make the app easier to use!
