PS4 Subtitles last working on PlexMediaServer-1.3.3.3148 (Synology). Now working in 1.5.1.3520!

Hi everyone,

Just a heads-up before updating to PlexMediaServer-1.3.4.3285 or PlexMediaServer-1.4.1.3362 (PlexPass).

Hardware and Versions:

  • PS4 4.07
  • Plex PS4 App 2.12.10 / PS4 01.40
  • DS415Plus DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 9
  • Chrome 56.0.2924.87

From 1.3.3, I upgraded to PMS 1.4.1.

  • I played a movie file in PS4 with subtitles and then I got this error “Undefined error -2140536828”.
  • I then played the same movie file in Chrome and it worked.
  • I disabled subtitles and played the same movie file in PS4 and it worked.

I uninstalled 1.4.1 and installed 1.3.4.

  • I played the same movie file in PS4 with subtitles and then I got this error “Undefined error -2140536828”.
  • I then played again the same movie file in Chrome and it worked.
  • I disabled subtitles and played the same movie file in PS4 and it worked.

I uninstalled 1.3.4 and installed 1.3.3 back.

  • I played the same movie file in PS4 with subtitles and it works.

The last version that works with subtitles in the PS4 is PlexMediaServer-1.3.3.3148. Tested on Synology Plex packages. I don’t know if the latest releases are working fine for other servers together with PS4.

Any idea where I can download 1.3.3 for netgear nas devices? Also is it possible to ‘downgrade’ plex on the netgear nas?

Same problem here with subtitles! My setup is DS716+ with DSM6.1, PMS 1.4.2.3400 and latest version of the playstation app.

Unfortunately, Plex does not provide archive releases anymore. Perhaps search for 1.3.3 netgear package through google.

I have upgraded to DSM 6.1-15047 and stayed at PLEX 1.3.3.3148. You have to downgrade if you want subtitles with PS4.

PlexMediaServer-1.4.3.3433 subtitles still do not work in PS4.
Uninstalled PlexMediaServer-1.4.3.3433.
Reverted back to PlexMediaServer-1.3.3.3148.

I have my media stored in Asustor NAS and when running plex in Samsung tv subtitles work like a charm, however PS4 does not work with any kind of subtitles! Very irritating. Please Plex folks fix PS4 client subtitle function.

I’m having a hard time reproducing any errors with subtitles and transcoding on 1.4.3.3433-03e4cfa35 and the PS4. This is the most recent non Plex Pass download.

@fritzcm will you please upload a file which fails to play when subtitles are enabled on this version?

Subtitles on the PS4 require Plex Media Server to transcode the video. This is too much for most NAS. The part that makes me super interested here is that @fritzcm has done some solid leg work early to identify that subtitles worked once and now don’t. This is a binary state that easier to debug.

Hey @mattseeley, sorry but I’ve been busy with work lately. But i just upgraded the Plex in my Synology to PlexMediaServer-1.5.1.3520-ed60c70d6-x86.spk and five observations:

  1. Subtitles did not work in PS4 Plex app

  2. Subtitles work in Google Chrome Plex

  3. Subtitles work in LG Smart TV Plex app

  4. Subtitles work in iPhone IOS 10.2.1

  5. Tried PS4 again. And now, subtitles are working in PS4! I don’t know if something just needed a rebuild in the upgrade.

I gotta edit the title somehow. :slight_smile:

Hi Fritz,

I updated my PMS on my synogy ds214play , now I can no longer use subtitles. I have been looking desperately online trying to find the subtitle working version 1.5.1.3520 that you posted , but no luck. I am only able to find windows install file no spk.

Please help. Can’t believe I paid 150$ for lifetime plex pass and I can’t even load subtitles lol
