PS5 player burns SRT subtitles even when setting is set to "Never"

The Plex app on PS5 burns SRT subtitles even when option is set to “Never” if the video is being transcoded. If quality is changed to original quality it can direct stream the same subtitles but as soon as any other quality setting is selected the subtitles get burned.

This really hits the server hard if the source file is 4K

I suspect the same may be true for the Xbox app but I don’t have an Xbox to test this myself.
