I was recently convinced to give Plex a try by a friend of mine and I really like it. I've moved over to it from XBMC and the iPad client is brilliant.
Anyway, one feature I had tried to get working on XBMC (never really successfully unfortunately) was a plugin called TVTime (or some variant of it) that would look at your database and build TV channels of programs based on the genre information. The few times I got the XBMC version to work it was quite good to have a comedy channel, cartoon channel or music video channel running in the background or just to turn on and veg out/doze off too. Something like this for Plex would be great, at least I think so :)
Does anything like this exist for Plex and I just missed it when looking for it (My apologies if that is the case) or lacking that, I would be interested in giving developing something like that a go (Would it be a new channel?). I have some python programming experience so I might be able to pull it off.
You can view by Genre or Collection. See the attached examples. You might not want to mess with the default Genres for TV or Movies, but you can certainly build Collections. A single Show or Movie can be in multiple collections too, I believe.
I will give it a look. It isn’t quite what I had in mind, the TV channel plug in had all sorts of niceness like channel logo overlays and bumpers and all sorts of things. Maybe i’ll play around with the idea and see what I can come up with.
Does it seem like a feature anybody else would like?
I'm sure that there would be interest I you can put something together. There have been several requests for something along the lines of PsuedoTV in the past.
