QNAP and Android TV talking but not playing

Cross posted in Plex Players > Smart TVs 'cos I don’t know where the issue is.

So I have a QNAP running Plex Media Server and an Android TV (TCL) running on the same LAN. If I connect to the same WiFi network with any computer or phone everything works perfectly. My media content shows up and I can play it without any issues.

When I try to do the same thing from my TV, I see all the normal entries for Movies and TV Shows that I have recorded BUT when I try to watch any of them I get the dreaded spinning circle. Live TV from within Plex works fine.

  • I have tried to connect the Television to both WiFi and Wired network points and the results are the same.
  • If I connect any notebook to the WiFi network and run Plex via a browser it works fine.
  • If I connect the same notebook to the wired connection and switch off the WiFi it works fine.
  • If I use the Plex App on an android device connected to the same WiFi it works fine.

Extract from the server log (below) shows following steps:

  • Start App
  • Leave focus on “Continue Watching”
  • Press “OK”
  • (Waited here with spinner until clock ticked to 12:42)
  • Pressed back
  • Pressed “Home”.

This only started happening on the last couple of weeks. Prior to that everything has been perfect.

Would need the android logs from it trying to play something

Here is the log file starting today.

I tried to watch two programs. One a recording of “Alone Australia” and the other a movie “Dogville” here:

05-17 11:50:40.927 i: [PlaybackManager] Preparing for Dogville

Result was the same each time - just spinning like it was buffering (note the TV and the source QNAP are on the same network - 192.168.100.0.

I would really appreciate any input anyone can provide - got me stumped so far.

Do you have subtitles enabled? do they play with none selected

Sorry for the delay - work got in the way.

So this gets (to quote Alice) “Curiouser and curiouser”

Subtitles made no difference but I accidentally stumbled over a work-around which hopefully will act as a clue.

Every time I start a playback of a TV program or a Movie that I have recorded, it goes into “buffering hell” and will not play. Occasionally I see the first frame and then spinning circle.

Here’s the weird thing. If I press pause and then play then the video plays back perfectly. It’s almost as if the video is starting in some sort of buffering mode.

The only reference I could find to anything like this is the "Adjust Automatically " toggle in Video Quality but that is already toggled off.

Feeling completely per"plex"ed.

Sorry for late reply. if this is still happening would you mind proving the full logs where it happens. if you do the work around can you let it spin for like a minute before doing work around so hopefully we can more easily see the change. ( you are welcome to message me the logs)
