@jo_strasser I closed the Plex App, rebooted both my QNAP and MAC, reopened the Plex App, then Plex Web Browser and hey presto, HW checkbox was there.

Hi,I have the same problem.
Latest QTS-4.3.2 beta and latest Plex 1.3.3 64bit version installed.
But I cannot find the checkbox for the experimental feature and I am a Plex Pass member.I´m using a QNAP TS-253a
Strange
version 1.4.0 is correct one with HW transcoding

@HappyPig0 Thanks! That works for me also
Now I have tested the hardware transcoding.
Always when the hardware feature is enabled I get the problem that the video playback stops for a few seconds every 3-5 minutes. The CPU load is lower than 40% on the quad core CPU.
It is equal which resolution is set on the player (AppleTV).
When I disable the hardware transcoding feature I have to set down the player to 4mbit / 720p to get a seamless playback without any Interruption. At this time the CPU cores are on 100%
Are there any settings that bring a better performance?
Thanks a lot, JO!

Bump! Also very interested. Real-time 720P decoding seems to stutter.
Yes, thats right. I get the same on my TS-253A with the latest versions (QTS-4.3 and PLEX Preview 1.4.x)
I am considering buying the TS-453A. My TV seems to be capable of playing my 4K videos wirelessly from my laptop using DirectStream. Will the videos play fine from the NAS using this mode? I don’t have a need to transcode the 4K video to other non 4K devices but if it can do that it would be a bonus. Many thanks.

Yes, even without hardware transcoding being turned on.

Can’t comment on this I’m afraid, my TS-251+ won’t cope with 4k transcoding, but it’s a different chipset/cpu.
The transcoder seems to choke on anything larger than 720p 4mb/s after a few minutes on my TS453Pro to android clients its fine in the web app. I am feeding it to Nvidia shield and firetv hardware and its the same on both. Also anything with ASS subtitles completely chokes, at any quality after a few minutes.
Anybody else running this on a TS453Pro. It seems to bomb out for me as soon as the throttling kicks in. When starting to play any media it moans its not fast enough to play smoothly or I get my network is not fast enough to stream at this quality.
i am testing this on a TS-453A with 8 GB and it s working smothly … my plex device is a roku premiere+ connected tot he network via wifi.
Hasn’t the latest few versions disabled transcoding ?

At what quality is it working for you? I just wonder if the TS-453-pro still does not have the grunt, I know TS-453A has a better GPU even though the pro has a faster CPU. Looking at the transcoder log it just keeping up when transcoding at 720p but any higher it cant.

Most of the media that i have is 1080p with different options for audio). so far everything plays and the CPU impact is negligible, compared with the latest version of plex that doe snot offer hardware encoding…locally i am streaming at 1080p and remotely (when i am out and about) at 720p
… Version 1.4.3.3433 removes the hardware transcoding feature from QNAP NAS systems. Thanks Plex!!

This is no news. Hardware transcoding is not released in any public release builds. It is ONLY available in PREVIEW release 1.4.0.3224 only downloadable from the preview thread.

Hi,
I have a 253A-Pro with the PlexPass version 1.4.3.3433, is it possible to install the preview version?
I need just to download the qpkg 1.4.0.3224 and then install it, or it is recommend to do something before the installation?
Thanks,
Antonio
@firefox87 Normally it should work. I’ve gone back from 1.4.3 to 1.4.2 without problems (simply installing older version over the recent one), so I suspect that going from 1.4.3 to 1.4.0.3224 will be the same.
In case of doubt you may ask here

You Need to install QTS 4.3.3 First and then the 64 Bit Version of 1.4.0.xxxx

do keep in mind that QTS 4.3.3 is in beta so other things might break… always backup frist…
Hardware transcoding seems to be working a lot better on the QNAP. CPU load has dropped from 90% down to about 30% whilst transcoding to 2 devices and also playing a local stream.
